Communion was instituted by Christ, not the Catholic Church. The very first communion was to establish a pattern that churches were to follow, namely to take Communion throughout their lives to commemorate and be constantly reminded that Jesus shed His blood and gave His body on the cross so that sinful humans could be redeemed. Transubstantiation is a false doctrine. The bread and wine do not literally become Christ's body and blood (Hebrews 9:23-28 tells us that Christ was only offered once for sins, and once was enough). Communion is a figurative example of what Christ did for us on the cross.

The First Communion (First Holy Communion) is a Roman Catholic ceremony. It is the colloquial name for a person's first reception of the sacrament of the Eucharist. Roman Catholics believe this event to be very important, as the Eucharist is one of the central focuses of the Roman Catholic Church.
