My daughter was in a level 1 coma( can arouse the person briefly but they lose consciousness again immediately after ) for 4 days and could hear me talking they had an VEEG (video EEG) on her and when I spoke her brain waves changed so yes I believe they can

one thing to consider when thinking of a coma is that there are different levels . hearing is said to be the last sense to go for most people who are dying. dreams do occur for the person in a coma at least brain activity is indicating that again at the various levels of a coma a person will have different amounts of brain activity. a person that is in a coma should be treated as a hearing person by all of the people who are within normal hearing range. certainly the idea of being in a coma and hearing what is being said but not being able to make any response to the talk could be of extreme frustration and could be a real horror. imagine being in that condition and hearing a couple of nurses say something like oh i wish this one would die in a few days he is so heavy i cant stand turning him . the opposite is also true when kind supportive words are spoken they would then have a positive effect . Loved ones should consider a person in a coma to be a person that can hear what they say and use this as a way of helping the patient and themselves deal with such a difficult time.

Yes they can...I have a friend who was in a coma for months and she heard the doctors talking about giving up on her and not long after that she was able to come out of it. If the brain is alive then other senses are still working

Neat question!
I knew a lady who was in a coma for 6 weeks and when she came out of it she could recall the conversations of the doctors and nurses that had been around her during her comatose state. She even pinpointed the one doctor who would come in and try to get the nurse to remove her life support!! He went pale when she recalled to him his conversation about her.
So YES, I believe the comatose patient can hear, smell and even respond to their surroundings to a degree. Probably different for everyone, though.

I know a guy who was in a coma for 6 mo. He said he was fully aware of all the conversation spoken in his presence - it was just that he was unable to open his eyes or respond.

I think, if i remmeber correctly, that they can have dreams and some sort of subconcious thought. I dont think they can hear though. I took psych 101 3 semesters ago so not to sure.

good question, people will lie to you and give you all sorts of information that they gather from their medical research but in the end, the only real evidence is not the occilliations that they get from their response to sound waves or from a touch of a human hand, but the one that the patient would give if they were to wake up, but you see if they were to wake up nothing else would matter and their study would be over, i would hope

Doctors feel that this is true and that if you talk with them they can hear you.
