I'm going to assume you will be making meals for your Mom as well. Here are some tips from the National Cancer Institute. You can go to their website for more ideas. When I took care of my Dad there were some days that he couldn't tolerate any cooking odors in the house, so please be sensitive to her needs as you take care of yourself and the others in your family.

Special Notes for Caregivers

There is much that you can do to help your friend or loved one through the period of cancer treatment. Read over the tips and suggestions in Managing Eating Problems During Cancer Treatment. Many may be useful to you as you prepare food or meals for the patient.

In addition, here are some other things to remember that will help you cope:

* Be prepared for the patient's tastes to change from day to day. Some days he or she won't want favorite foods because they don't taste good. Other times, he or she will be able to eat a dish that couldn't be tolerated just the day before.
* Have food within easy reach at home. For example:
o a snack-pack of applesauce or pudding and a spoon on the bedside table if the patient isn't feeling well that day
o a bag of cut-up carrots on the top shelf of the refrigerator
* Have meals and snacks ready so the patient can have something to eat when he or she is ready.
* Be prepared for times when the patient is able to eat only one or two foods for a few days in a row, until side effects diminish. Even if he or she can't eat at all, still encourage plenty of fluids. Tables 2 and 3 contain a variety of examples of fluids, and the section on "Coping with Side Effects" has lots of ideas for getting enough fluids.
* Talk to the patient about needs and concerns, and about ideas that might work best. A willingness to be flexible and supportive no matter what will help the patient feel in control of the situation.
* Try not to push the patient into eating and drinking. Encourage and support without being overwhelming.

A good recipe I received on a recipe group from LiveJournal utilized a lot of extra food items I had to get rid of before moving, but can work just as well for you. Its like a vegetable meat soup:

1 jar spaghetti sauce
1 bag stir fry veggies
1-2 lb ground turkey, browned
various seasonings (garlic and onion powder and maybe chili powder if you're not good with spices)
1 bag egg noodles or shells or whatever
A cup or two water

Mix all, boil, stir occasionally to avoid burning, and you'll have a great meal!

Do you have a rice cooker? If not get one that doubles as a vegetable steamer.Make you rice and put vegetables in the steamer part.
Go into the spice aisle and get yourself some oven bags, this is not necessary if you have a dutch oven or covered caserole dish to put in the oven.
Get some ground turkey, diced tomatoes combine one whole can shake garlic powder alover the meat in a bowl and combine again.Form into a loaf and Place in caserole dish or oven bag and bake until bubbly and brown remove from oven and pour an additional can of diced tomatoes place back in oven for 10 minutes.

Make your own pizza with ready made shells and add cheese and whatever you like.

For dessert get neutfachatel cheese 8 oz.
1 cup of sugar combine in mixing bowl with hand or stand mixer add
1 tsp of vanilla extract,
1 teaspoon of vanilla
a dash of salt.....(blend these ingredients completely before adding the eggs.
2 eggs which you must add one at a time and do not add the next one until completely blended.
pour into premade graham cracker crust and bake in preheated oven for 25-30 minutes.

There are many recipes at this site. I hope your mom gets better. Have you ever heard of herbal life diet, I know people that have done this. I know someone that had terminal cancer and lived a long time by the use of herbal life.

I went thru that...while I was home caring for my mom before she died...I moved in with her and her husband and my kids. I had alot of people to feed in a short time. I started relying on my crock pot. I could throw all the ingredients in the pot in the morning before work, make sure my dad stired it during the day and by the time I got home..Dinner was done..It cooked it self basically.

So try that..Look up crock pot recipes.

..along the idea of the crock pots and slow cookers. Anything that you can just cook in the one pot for the whole family makes dinner time much easier. You can just put the ingredients in the oven and let them cook.

Best wishes,
Kath
