I have a diamond because that is what I wanted, but my fiance picked it out and I absoulutely love that. What is most important about an engagement ring is that it is a symbol from the person you love. I even told my fiance before we were engaged that I didn't care what he got me, as long as it was from him, it would make me happy. If I were to choose another stone I would have probably gone with a ruby because that is his birthstone. Also, diamonds match EVERYTHING!

My engagement ring is a purple sapphire and it's the most beautiful engagement ring I've ever seen. Diamonds are boring, everyone has one, and I'm so not like everyone else. The key to a non-traditional color is a brilliant cut jewel in a very traditional setting. This is something that you should actually discuss with your girlfriend; most women I know want the traditional diamond. Another thing I don't like about diamonds is the whole conflict issue.

Just as a side note - I see that a few people have mentioned emeralds for engagement rings and that can be a risky choice for a ring that will be worn everyday. Emeralds are very delicate as gem stones go, they are easy to shatter and that would suck. Also tanzanites can't be worn during the day because direct sunlight will fade them. Opals are also very delicate. There are others that are fragile as well, find a knowledgable jeweler to help you out.

My own engagement ring is a sapphire, with some small diamonds on the band. I love it, and in fact I chose it over a diamond ring because my husband was nice enough to ask me what I wanted rather than just assuming I'd want a diamond.

I chose this because I think sapphires are prettier than diamonds, and also because to tell you the truth I find a large diamond rather pretentious--not to mention boring. There is also, of course, the issue of buying conflict diamonds.

If you are going to have a stone other than a diamond, it is important to remember that the ring is going to be worn all the time, so you need to chose a stone that is not too delicate. Diamonds are the hardest stone of all, but sapphires are also very strong.

I LOVE gemstone engagement rings! They are unique and truly special. But it really does depend on what your gf prefers. As another poster said, diamond engagement rings are only a relatively recent "traditional" stone. Honestly, what is so special about a clear stone? It doesn't stand out, unless it is huge, and if it's not cut right it won't even sparkle properly. I've told my serious bf that when we get engaged (hopefully soon!) I would prefer a blue sapphire ring over a normal diamond. Everyone has a diamond....it's just not special in my opinion.

I would always prefer diamonds. I think they look so much classier and more like an engagement/wedding ring than one that is all other gems. it is a matter of personal preference though. however, I do think a center diamond with small emeralds, sapphires or rubies would be really beautiful too. as far as bands go, I would always choose white gold with a platinum setting for the stones (the platinum will be stronger to hold the stones, and the white gold band will shine better). I do not like yellow gold at all.

There are lots of reasons for diamonds, but I think the most "practical" one is that they match everything. I love coloured gemstones, and I think any other type of stone is totally fine for an engagement ring. I recently got a pink topaz ring with diamond accents, and that would have been a lovely engagement ring!
Aside from diamonds, there's nothing wrong with cz or other manufactured stones, either. All depends on what the guy thinks the girl might like, his budget, etc. -- mature women realize the symbolism that comes with the ring, anyway!
Wish you luck!

i have been married once and i never really cared for my engagement ring. if i were to ever get married again, i would ask for an emerald instead of the diamond. you asked why, just because i think that gem is so much prettier than a diamond. also, diamonds are common, i would want something different the second time around.

I have a sapphire engagement ring with a few diamond accents. I'm a Feb birthday, which is amythest, but I love navy blue as a color - so that's why I got a sapphire instead of a diamond solitaire.

My engagement custom made ring is a heart shaped 1.5 Excellent medium royal blue sapphire on a 18 k white gold ring.

Sapphire is my birthstone and I prefer Sapphire's over all other gems.

Almost every Jewel item I have has sapphires of every shade.

I do like Diamonds, but they are too "boring" and "original" for me.

I like my jewels to be unique and unoriginal.

I was thrilled to know my now husband knows what I like and my personality.

When my husband gets home, we are going to order our wedding rings as I want to get mine custom made again. Thinking possibly a 3k heart deep shape sapphire with little diamonds on possibly a 24 k white gold band. I have to work with the jeweler, that lives in Israel (where we buy it from) We will exchange them on our renewl in Maui in Feb. Told you we like uniqueness and unoriginal lol.
