Let me help you out as to who is who...

Onkyo is mainstream consumer electronics.

Yamaha is STILL very good mid-fi audiophile (yep...there's that word again).

As far as wattage goes...just because something is higher wattage doesn't mean ANYTHING! It is the current you need to be looking at!

Yamaha is still a well-regarded brand in the audio world. I truly would need more specs on the Yamaha to give you a true assessment of these amplifiers.

Just to give you a quick reference to what wattage truly means....here is my amplifier...
http://www.ckaudio.com/t100.htm (not that exact one...mine's not for sale).
This amplifier can EASILY run some of the world's most complex speakers....and it's only 60 watts...but there's that current again.
If you look at the specs of it....is frequency response is DC-100Khz. Most equipment in the world of electronics is lucky to get a response os 20-20Khz. DC is direct current...which means the amplifier must be able to keep constant voltage to the speaker pushing the driver out and holding it out.
That, essentially, makes this amp clearly MORE powerful than it's rated 60 Watts....and running in Pure, discreet Class A.

I hope I made sense with that for you.
But honestly...if you want to step away from mainstream electronics for a lower wattage, higher current amplifier...the Yamaha is the way to go. The higher current tends to make your music smoother and more transparent.

Good luck in your equipment hunt!

Hi.dddd. Why do you need a 2 channel amplifier with a tuner?
You already have one in your surround sound receiver.
The Yamaha AX-497 (about $290) delivers 85 watts RMS per channelinto 8 ohms.Yamaha are very good. They seem to deliver a softer sweeter sound than the Onkyo (better musicality)
The Onkyo M282(about $200) is a 100 watts RMS per channel amp.I think the Onkyo has more "punch"to its sound. They are both very good and i think it would be better if you picked the one that appeals to you.Unless of course you still want a receiver with lower quality sound.
Have a look at the links below. Cheers, mate.

If you're comparing those two models, then onkyoa is capacity is 100 watts compared to yamaha's 50 watts.

Now please check on the following?

1) If both come at the same cost - go in for onkyo. Higher wattage does not mean clear sound, but onkyo is quite reputed.

2) check for higher wattage models in Yamaha, technologically Yamaha is better. If you dont mind spending a little extra - Yamaha is goood!

Onkyo rates their power differently (honestly) from the Yamaha...Onkyo gives true (RMS) power ratings, while Yamaha gives exaggerated (peak) power ratings...Click this link to see what I'm talking about: http://www.avtruths.com/rmspeak.html

Im a bigger fan of onkyo's myself. They have good strong high current apms that have very low distorion and good clean power. They've always sounded cleaner to me than the onkyo's. Like they have more depth to their sound. Ive always been able to get more high end sound out of them.
