I have 6" speakers in my car but the new ones that I would like to get are only available in 5".

Can I use these?

As long as they fit depth wise. If you are replacing factory speakers, check the available depth on the aftermarket speakers to make sure they fit. I have run into several vehicles that require a low profile door speaker to avoid the window tracks. Some aftermarket speakers are 3" deep or more. And yes, you will probably need to buy or fabricate a plate to mount them.

The only issue is that you can't have a gap between the edge of the speaker and the edge of the mounting hole. If the speaker is smaller than the mounting opening, you need to seal the gap or it will have a seriously bad effect on the sound. Usually this means building a mounting plate the size of the old speaker, with a cut-out that fits the new speaker.

If you can install it without any gaps, there's no problem with using a replacement speaker that's smaller than the old one.

yeah you can use them, as long you still have the right ohm load, (assuming you have a factory head unit) .
But you will most likely have to make a mount to install them in the same place.
