I have had this since birth, different sounds in both ears. I understand the machinations, what it is, what causes it. I have seen audiologists and had counselling. But no cure. I have spent every waking moment for 60 years listening to it.
I have tried ignoring it; concentrating on it and telling my brain to ignore the sounds. But nothing works.
Do you know anything - no matter how 'quacky' - that might work?

PS. I have hearing aids for both ears, but I can't wear them in bed - which is when the tinitus is worst.

Can't help you with Quacky answers as to denigrate things that might help as quackery is somewhat offensive. Conventional medicine will always refer to things outside of their field as quackery, (flim-flam, voodoo etc to name a few of Dr Franks) but how dare they be so offensive when they haven't helped the person or even made them worse.
Hopi ear candles MIGHT work for you - as they work for SOME people. It's horses for courses with things like tinnitus. I've treated people with tinnitus with homoeopathy and / or ear candles with success in some cases. There are lots of natural therapies that might help - it's finding the one for you that will. If nothing else, ear candling is massively relaxing. It's completely safe if you are trained in the practice, use the only candles that insurance firms will support, and you are sensible!
ALternatively, homoeopathy might be the thing - again I've had great successes with treating people with tinnitus - all arriving having run the gauntlet of conventional medicine for more years than they care to remember. Go to http://www.homeopathy-soh.org/ to find a practitioner local to you. I recommend it because it works for some. Good luck - you WILL find something that will help you but these are 2 therapies that I have had success with.

Hi - I'm 26 and I've had Tinnitus since I was about 12. I had a bad sinus cold one winter, blew my nose and blew out my eardrum as well and somehow it triggered Tinnitus because I've had it every since then. I went to every doctor in my city (St Louis) and eventually went to the best there was and he simply told me there's nothing you can do but live with it because he had it too. I almost cried right there in the room at 12 years old. I've found it's ok during the day as the sound of things going on around me seems to drown it on (I can hear it even now if I try) but at night was the hardest to get used to. I never hear complete silence ever and never will again. I tried sleeping with the radio on quietly and that didn't really work for me (try it it may work for you) or I tried accupuncture and chiropractic back adjustments. They only seemed to change the noise pitch in my ear not get rid of it. I've just learned to deal with it unfortunately that's all I can really tell ya. Mine sounds like white noise in both ears - supposedly they've come out with hearing aids that you keep adjusting until you find the frequency of the noise and it matches it so as to drown it out, I dont know anything about them though. if I think of anything else I'll let you know. :0) Hope this helps some.

Sorry to hear about this. Anything constant like that is terrible. I have had that occasionally and it would drive me nuts. Go back and see another hearing specialists and maybe they can help if you get a second opinion. Possibly a hearing aide would help you hear other things and mask the ringing.

a good therapy for tinnitus is to not stay in silence because it exasterbates the ringing.

the rational to that is similar to this phenomenon: if you are sitting in a dark room and there is one light on then that light has a big potential to hurt your eyes but if you are sitting in a room with many lights on, it doesnt bother you as much. Same thing with sounds!

yeah ive had it since 2 years ago, i had a virus and got sick, they thought i had like a chronic fatigue. And that was a after affect i guess. i dont think theres anything they can do. they juz tell me to go to sleep with the tv on or music if it gets to me, i can only hear the noises when its silent, mostly when i go to bed. it doesnt bother me to much so i guess im lucky.

There are no cures for tinnitus. Masking using a noise generator may help.

Why however go for quacky answers, you may be desperate and I can sympathise and understand that but quacky doesn't work or it would not be quacky.
