As the first poster said, the original sausages came from Frankfurt, Germany and Vienna, Austria, respectively. However, possibly because the two kinds were so similar, the terms are pretty much interchangeable today in the US.

It's very important to spell "wiener" correctly! The 'i' comes BEFORE the 'e'! If you spell it the other way, it would be pronounced like "whiner." And that would be a major insult to "wiener dogs" worldwide.
