It's quite normal to cry over a beloved pet. Of course the bright side is YOU! What you did was very loving and unselfish. Don't hold back your tears---crying can be very therapeutic. When you reach a point in your life when you have room again for a pet you will look back at this time with fond memories.

I've been there a thousand times over with one pet or another...it takes time, if you have pictures of the dog doing happy things then keep them somewhere in view, like on the night stand or above the dresser...maybe write a blog about the dog; the day you got him, the funniest thing he ever did...if you can then call the new owners and check up on him every once in a while...most people will understand and may even let you visit

I am so sorry about your dog. My eyes watered up while reading this. Look at the bright side, your dog has more space to run around. He is probably happy.

I have had this exact problem. I just thought its happy, its helping another family. I ended up getting a cat later on that year. I also tried to just think about all the good times but that just made my cry even more. Hope this helps

We took in a 3 year old mixed-breed when the owner couldn't keep the dog in her small apartment. In the beginning we let the old owner visit the dog..and soon, the old owner bought a house, got married and got a new dog...I think that helped a lot because she hasn't seen her old dog now in over a year! Do you know who has your dog? Could you visit? Would they let you? Just a thought.

I would say for a while just let yourself cry. But keep in mind that he is in a place with more space and he is probably happy and he most likely misses you too. But he has what he needs and that is important. See if you can visit him sometime.

Just think of all the good times you had and the funny things he would do with you or to you. Its not bad to cry and eventually you will get past the crying and you will only laugh. Let yourself greive right now and just have your patience. Enjoy the memories you had.

These memories will be with you forever but you have to tell yourself you did what was best for him. Some thoughts will make you cry or make you laugh & both reactions are good. Giving a loved one to a new home is not unlike having to put them down. You loved him so you did what he needed & what was best for him. You should be proud of yourself for putting his needs first & that's what you do when you love someone.
Time will make it easier but you'll never forget him.
