I guess I should state the true intent here, I am not trying to prove guilt or innocense. I want to know why is it that even though we have 132 million people who filed returns where is the returns? I mean our country has well over 300 million citizens right? So what says I have to pay or you or any other person for that matter if less than half of our country actualy files. To take this a step further, even if no one filed, I mean no one, excluding corporations, so this would include irs agents themselves, do you honestly belive they could or would waste their time to come after you for tax evasion. I highly doubt it. Mostly because they do not have the resources to come after an entire nation. It doesn't matter if we file they automaticaly get their money, it comes out of our pay whether we want it too or not. We also still pay into social security, yet I will never get a dime from it. So do you think they will stop taxing us for it.

Even though our country has over 300 million citizens, many of them are children, which more than likely would not have to file a tax return, also many of them are senior citizens which many of those would not have to file tax returns also, and in addition, many of the tax returns that were filed, were joint returns, which meant that for every 1 joint return filed that took care of 2 american citizens. So, 132 million tax returns could take care of those 300 million citizens. And just remember what our taxes do provide in this country. Funds for the Army, Navy, Air Force, government agencies that help keep us safe, etc. I know no government is perfect, but it's still better than no government at all, which would be anarchy.

You're not paying attention, friend!

I stated that a little over 132 million returns were filed in 2004. Of those filed about 51 million were joint returns. 51 million joint returns = 102 million taxpayers. Add that to the remaining 81 million non-joint returns and you have 182 million taxpayers accounted for right there. That does leave about 118 million non-filers. A large chunk of them are accounted for by children and retireees who do not make enough money to have to file a return or only receive non-taxable income and don't need to file a return. Add to that people on disability and welfare along with the very poor who also have less income than the filing requirement amount and you're approaching 100% compliance with the tax laws.

Sure, there are some who refuse to file for one reason or another -- ignorance, tax protestors, tax evaders, and common crimminals -- but the vast majority of Americans DO file their taxes and pay them more-or-less properly. The IRS does deal with a significant portion of those who don't.

A few may fly under the radar for a while, and even fewer may fly under the radar for most of their lives but the'll all eventually pay the price. Think of the small cash-basis businessman in a small town who never paid any taxes reaching retirement age. He trundles down to the local Social Security office and applies for retirement benefits. What does he get? Zip! Nada! Zero! What goes around, comes around.

I am thinking that you don't like paying taxes. While there is plenty to be said about the waste that goes on stop for a minute and list what benefits are received from taxes. You may not be able to see a direct connection between the dollar you pay and the benefit you personally receive. But you drive on roads, paid for with taxes. The guy who cleans the street is paid for with taxes in most cases. The cop who arrests you or me if we break the law is paid with taxes. The hospital you may go to after you have a heart attack over this tax thing is paid for at least in part by taxes. If you think about it almost every aspect of your life is related to taxes paid by somebody. The one thing that I have noticed is that those who cry the most pay the least and use most of the services anyway.

the reason for the difference in population and number of returns filed each year is because alot of those in the population are minor children , depnedents of taxpayers and spouses of taxpayers who may very well be taxpayers of their own rite.
