He has an abscess, it needs to be drained. Make an appointment with the vet to get it taken care of. Ask for an e-collar for him....yes, they DO make e-collars for cats, they are plastic and Velcro, and yes, they work!

Hate to tell you this, but it is a trip back to the vet. This time, ask for an Elizabethian Collar. It's a big plastic thing that goes around the neck and prohibits things like chewing or licking. Cats mouths are full of bacteria, and he is probably compounding the injury by his own licking. Keep up with the antibacterial ointment, but make another trip back to the vet for the collar. Well worth the cost of it. Vet might even sell you one with out seeing the cat again.

If you're seeing "blistering" and pus, the area may be infected. Take your cat back to the vet and get him checked out again. The vet can probably put a collar on him to keep him from chewing at the sores until they're healed. You may have to sedate the cat and "crate" him for about a week until the site has the chance to heal properly.

You should have gotten a cone collar the first time you went to the vet, now you have to go back again...
when a cat or dog gets an injury like the one your cat has they are always given a cone of plastic that starts from the cat/dog's collar and extends past the ears. this is so that the cat/dog wont be able to do what your cat has done and bite and or scratch the area.
if you're worried about your cats comfort when wearing the cone there is no need, they were made for that in mind. my cat has had to wear one when she got fixed and she was fine with it after a while.
when the cat needs to 'go' take the collar off for the time it takes and put it straight back on again after he's finished.
when feeding him try beef or chicken mince in clumps that he can take directly from your hand, that way he doesn't need to take off the funnel collar.

Get some antibiotics into it and performance a vet examine the wound. My cat had a run in with a fox contained in the fall and it nailed her contained in the hind leg. It recognized to heal perfect for about 2 weeks and then the legs ballooned to 2 times the dimensions from an infection. She has recovered besides the indisputable fact that the an infection compromised the joints contained in the leg. She has been contained in the homestead all iciness and is only comprehend putting out to stroll perfect. If it does not advance added she might want to should be constrained to homestead duty completely.

Had the same thing with my cat. He go in a fight and had an oozing hole in his neck, my mom being a country girl refused to take him to the vet for such a small sore. I cleaned it up with human meds and it scabbed up and healed. 2 days after it healed I picked him up that night and he smelled horrible. I thought he had stepped in poo but after a quick inspection I found a indented scap and an open sore that was full of pus. I drained it and started cleaning it again. I had to drain it every day for a week and treat it with antiseptics. It healed up nicely although we were too broke to take him to the vet (my step-dad had left a few months earlier and we were just making ends meet). Just make sure he can like or bite his wound by covering it or make a make shift cone out of poster board.

I agree with the other answers, it sounds like he has an abscess and needs to go back to the vet. In addition -- or maybe instead of -- getting the E collar, ask the vet for PAIN MEDS. Maybe he won't scratch and chew the area so much if he's not in pain.
Good luck.

My male cat came in one night and had a running sore at the base of his tail...sounds similar...I too thought he had gotten into a fight although he has been fixed...turns out my brother saw one of the neighbor's shooting into our yard with a pellet gun (from two houses away)...seems Baby Boy was his victim...I cleaned it with peroxide and covered it with antibiotic ointment for several weeks...it scabbed over a few times but the peroxide flushes it open...I ended up calling one of our older pharmachists in town who use to be the only "vet" in town and he gave me some antibiotics for him...did the trick...if you ever get a prescription from your vet try getting it filled at the pharmacy instead of at the vets...usually is a lot cheaper than the vets office...Just a Crazy Pet Lover

He needs to go back to the vet for a recheck...have the wounds cleaned. He may need to have an e-collar ( the cone) on...Sometimes with cats it's hard to keep watch on them.
Might want to consider having him hospitalized for a few days to have that taken care, and keep the wound management under control and keep him confined.
good luck

Shame, poor thing.
You have to get him a cone collar so he can't get at the wound, a petstore or your vet will have those for sale. Have the vet check him since more aggressive treatment may be called for.
