In the US, you'd need a falconry license to aquire a hawk. This basically involves a two-year apprenticeship under an experienced falconer (you can have a hawk during this time, but you're working with it under supervision), passing a written exam, building approved housing (passing an inspection) for the bird, etc.

The North American Falconers Association (http://www.n-a-f-a.org/htm/aboutfal_main.htm) has more information. Falconry.com also has a large selection of links on the subject.

I do falconry (hunt with hawks) and in order to have a hawk you must first be an apprentice for two years under someone else who owns birds legally then you have to study A LOT!!! and go to your court house and take a written long test in order to hunt with them on your own and then take another series of test to be able to own a bird

good luck!

Usually a State and Federal permit in the US. You can check with your state's Fish and Game Department to find out what's required where you live.
