I am a veterinary technician of 14 years. If the leash has strangled any portion of the intestine, it cuts off blood supply and that part of the intestine will die. Then the dog will die, painfully. If the dog is has no appetite, is vomiting and has no stool these are indications of a linear foreign body. Occasionally small bits work themselves out, but if the dog is very sick, surgery is probably the only option. If the dog ate a small bit of leash and is straining a lot but still eating and active, giving some mineral oil can help it pass but again, if the dog is really sick, that will not help.

Seeing you asked this question on a weekend she has to find an emergency vet hospital, you cannot wait until Monday. The dog will probably die in a short time. Most hospitals will take a credit card or work out a payment plan. If she loves her pud why does she care what it is going to cost? A few years ago my Pitt Bull pup got into the garbage and got very sick. I took here to emergency and they said she had her intestine blocked and had to have surgery to save her life. Turns out she swallowed a corn cob. At the time I had been laid off and was not working. There was no question about her having the surgery even though it was going to cost me a bunch of money.
Yes, It cost me $3000.00 for her to have the surgery. She was about 8 months old when it happened. She is 5 years old now and the most playful and loving of my 3 dogs. If she cannot truly cannot afford to have the surgery she should have the dog put down to stop the suffering as the dog will be throwing up constantly.

I'm sorry but nothing at home is going to help pass something like a leash in the dogs intestines. You need to get your friend's dog to a vet ASAP! If she can't afford to take him to the vet then how does she feed, or get the dog shots??? If she can't pay for it all at once then work out a payment plan with the vet or borrow her some money. Most vets will work something out with the owner's though. But the dog needs to be seen cause that's something that's not going to pass or be brought up by vomiting either. Dog needs to be x rayed to see where its caught up in it and then it will have to be surgically removed.

Tell her to take the dog to the vet, to ask if she can do a payment plan...though the dog most likely won't make it through the night. Also she could call the local animal shelter, and ask them for advise, who she could take the animal to, they often know people who will help out in cases where economics plays a role in the dogs life.

I wish your friend the best of luck...such a heartbreaking story!! God Bless!!

Exploratory surgery

Alright, whoever said (several answers down from here) to give the dog mineral oil is wrong. If there is a leash in the dog's gut, mineral oil will not shift it. Only surgery will. Mineral oil will cause major complications at surgery.

This isn't just serious, this is an EMERGENCY. Unless she wants her dog to die in AGONY, she'd better find a way to get him to a vet -- and I mean NOW.

I'm sorry the news isn't better, but that's just how it is. Perhaps she can borrow the money or make arrangements with a vet.

Good luck.

she needs an oral syringe, get some mineral oil, she will have to force feed him the mineral oil with the syringe, DO NOT put mineral oil in a bowl for him to lick up, they cannot smell it and so will try to sniff it and can end up asphyxiating themselves. My pup jumped onto my counter while i was gone and ate a bunch of candy in plastic wrappers and got an intestinal blockage he was about 20 lbs? at the time and I gave him two teaspoons (1 syringe for me) 4 times a day. I took away his food for the first day because i did not want him to get more backed up and just gave him water. on the third day he finally pooped, it took about 4 days total for him to get it all out. I knew he was better when he got really hungry and started scarfing down food. The leash mey never pass though she needs to be prepared for the very real possibility of a large vetbill or her dog dying.

alot of animal hospitals have payment options, and the dog needs to get to one asap. whether she can afford it or not the dog needs to get serious medical attention before it dies.
