a) self confidence
b) belief in yourself
c) presence of mind
d) physical strength
and to develop all of the above you can choose to practise any of the techniques (martial arts, boxing, even running :), etc) in a dojo/class/training where you get hands on experience of a fight with a good opponent.

The best self defense is good people skills and good judgement. Even with those it sometimes helps to have skills. The problem with self defense today is guys can't take the the whoopin' they had coming to them like they used to back in the day. Back in the day if you were harassed by some wanna be thug you could just whoop him up and he'd take it like a man and leave you alone. Now Billy Bad Azz can't take it so he'll go get his gun and come looking for you and your family, friends, classmates, or anybody else he can find to prove his manhood which only really shows what a punk he is. Any martial art is good but I beleive Muay Tai is better for a real world situation where all else has failed, but your good judgement will help keep you out of situations and people skills can diffuse a bad situation but sometimes you just gotta get in the gutter and get down and dirty. Pick an art that has good instructors nearby and stick to it. It will serve you well after other options have failed. Beware of Billy and his guns!

That is not a question that anyone on this site or anywhere else can answer for you. The best self-defense is what works for YOU. It is diff. for everyone. You just need to train and learn from XP. After a while you'll learn what works and what doesn't work. Then you know what is the best SD.

The ability and willingness to walk OR RUN away from an adverse encounter!

None of the choices above will do you any good unless you are PROFICIENT and have CONFIDENCE in your ability.

If you have that, any of them will suffice!

Whichever style YOU can use most effectively. It's the artist, not the art.
