My brother recently joined a gym and is trying to get me to go with him. I admit that I'm not as fit as I could be, even though I'm skinny. But I feel very self conscious about working out infront of others. I'm very shy. Do you go to a gym? What's it like?

Here is what people who are "regulars" in a gym, think about "newcomers;"

1. They welcome you. A gym is like a social group. They need people to make the group interesting.

2. They will help you. Again, they want you to come back again and again.

3. They respect you for TRYING! People who exercise get really annoyed at people who are out of shape and do NOTHING to get into shape. No excuses!!

4. You and your brother can be a team.

5. The nicest guys you will meet go to gyms. Most have no hang ups. Most are happy with life.

6. After a year, you will be a different person.

Hope this helps. No go and join your brother at the gym. And give him "snaps" for wanting you to be healthy, too.

I go to a gym. I am pretty focused on what fitness plan I have for the day. I used to belong to an all women's gym and I prefer that, however, I moved to a new state and there are no women gyms here so I joined a gym my brother used to go to. It's cheap and has plenty of equipment, though sometimes, the guys there hog the free weight benches and the bench press machine!!!! However, I still make progress regardless of them....ha. I believe working-out is part of a life plan, so I would say go for it, your body will reward you! Many of my friends were not as motivated...well, heck, practically none! You have to do what is good for you, not what everyone else is doing or not doing. You may find a gym that you like better. Most will give you a day pass at least so that you can try it out.

I would recommend checking out a few different gyms in your areas, some can be a bit daunting and intimidating! Check out different gyms and see which would suit your style the best. Talk to the staff about your goals, you can even ask when the gym would be at its quietest if your were self conscious about working out in front of others.

I've been a gym member for many years and can honestly say the majority of people who are there are too busy worrying about their own issues and their own workouts to worry about what anyone else is doing! I think it's a great idea if you and your brother join together, you can support each other and help each other train. Good luck!

Yes go. There are different types of crowds in different gyms and at different times. Ask around. As far as not being in as good of shape as some others, that's why you're there. To work on it. Don't worry about doing too much at first or you'll get frustrated and quit. Just get used to going and doing something. It can be a good social function as well and once you integrate it into your day, you will start to look forward to it. I would tell you to pop your head in and check out the scene at different gyms near you, but you have to be careful for some jack-*** used car salesman type who will try to intimidate you into getting a membership such as Golds Gym, Power House Gym, Four Seasons, Family Fitness. Although, they are very good gyms. Take a friend not afraid to tell them to shove it if you want to think about it. The hardest part is getting started...

Call the gym your brother goes to and ask them if they have a workout area for women. Chances are they do, and you could exercise amongst women only if you choose.

Regardless, no one really cares about what someone else does at the gym. Exercise and fitness are truly only about YOU, and whatever you do, you will feel MUCH BETTER.

Good Luck

I go to a gym when I've got time. It's a very calm, relaxed atmosphere believe it or not. Everyone there is usually willing to help and give advice. If you're shy, go with someone (cough.. your brother.. cough). Anyway, you'll have more energy if you work out too.

You need to take your preferences into account in picking a gym. You must also commit to forcing yourself to go every day or every other day for 3 months. Then you'll have the habit. Good luck.

Well, i usually work out at the local YMCA, and i can tell you that it is a comfortable atmosphere. People aren't going to be like "OMG LOL LOOK AT HER SHES RUNNING SO SLOW LAWL." People are actually pretty friendly at gyms. I say go. You won't regret it.

go for the gym, it`s cool. you can be shy when you will have to dosomething that others are not doing, but then each person in the gym is also doing something.
