My daughter has a computer about a yr old. The last time I installed an up date I get an error everytime I turn on the computer. It says something like the DLL memory has been relocated I need to contact the DLL manufactor for a new path. I than did a system restore and set the install to no installs. Do I really need to do these updates, and if you do not understand what the error said I can allow it to update and get the exact words.

It is recommended to download and install updates to patch up holes in your security against some malware. However, that error you are getting, I suspect that I had it (and MANY others have too) because of a glitch from Microsoft's updates. If I am right, they do have a fix for that error and I believe this is the link:

You should not reinstall your computer just from a minor error since your computer is just a year old. And it is always a good idea to download the updates from your Automatic Updates.

I hope this helped. :)

Hehe
The answer is you don't really have to.
What Windows XP updates are is updates that protect your computer (things they should have included in before they sold Windows :( ) I personally turn it off because it is annoying. I am assuming that you have ALL LEGAL mirosoft programs because what Window updates do, is that they "look" at some of the program you install (such as windows xp or word) to see if it is legal, and than it does it for you (update)

for ur computer to run more smoothly, Microsoft releases some updates every month and u MUST install them. But there's nothing to worry. U have a choice which update to install. Not every update is needed. Some are for softwares such as MS Office.
Go to Microsoft's site. go to updates area. it will scan for the updates needed for ur pc. Then click Custom Install.

No you don't HAVE to install the updates that microsoft recommends. Some people will say that it is very important, that it will fix what is called worm holes that viruses find their way in to your computer through. But in actuality the updates don't do anything other than give you a warm fuzzy feeling thinking wow my computer is up to date now. But you DON"T HAVE to install them if you dont wish to.

I have never have never had experience with Windows XP Home, we have Professional, but you should not have to get updates (Our desktop has never been connected to the Internet, so it never got updated), though I would suggest that you do, because most of them are security updates.

Your not required to get updates, however your exposing the computer to virus attacks. Most of the updates are geared to fix holes in the operating system that the viruses are geared to take advantage of.
