I bought two puppies in September, a Cairn Terrier and a Lab. They were housebroken relatively fast, in no less than two months with no accidents. They know when I saw "it's time to go pee pee" that it's time to run to the door. As soon as one of them pees/poos I cheer them on with the oh so adorable "aww good boy/girl" Works like a charm. You should see how they perk up when I say "pee pee time".

Puppies usually pee about 5-8 times a day. So bring it out to it's allocated weeing area every time it wakes up from a nap, it drinks water or eats food and finishes playing.
If you have the time, bring it out to urinate as often as possible. I try to bring it to his allocated urinating area every 30mins when I let them out to play.
Make a fuss when it does it at the correct place by making happy sounds and patting it to encourage your puppy to do it at the same place again (positive training).
Dont bother to shout at the puppy when you come home and discover it had made several mistakes. You have to catch it whilst it is doing it at the wrong place to ensure your puppy knows that you are unhappy. Dont hit it because your puppy will learn to fear you. Instead bring it out to the area you want the puppy to do its business and point to it and say "here".
I use the word "pee pee" which sounded kinda corny. LOL.
If you stay in an apartment, you can try using this product called Pet loo. It is a box with fake grass on top of it. When your puppy urinates, the urine drains underneath the grass into an allocated area in the box which you can pour it away. It looks really nice.
However, if you are tight on cash, try using those absorbent urine pads for training. Dont throw it away everytime there is a small patch of pee.

If you regular its food, feed it wait 15 or 20 minutes then take it to its potty spot and just say now potty or peepee or poopoo which ever you prefer. Just be persistant and keep reinforcing it. It will eventually get the hint and do it when told to in the right spot. Keep in mind pups mess up and they go alot more. They cant it hold it as long as adult dogs. Good Luck

I use "outside" But whatever you use, stay consistant. Pick a single word and stick to it. He'll learn it after time. Everytime you say it to him, take him out. Every hour hour when you're home. If at work, do it just before you leave and as soon as you get home. Don't punish him if he goes "outside" inside. Dogs won't know what they are being punished for. Just take him right outside. It takes more work on your part than it does his, a lot of people don't understand that. Stick with, stay consistant, bottom line.

Potty, thats an e ending word "Do you want to go potty?"
Then go outside with it, and wait till someting happens, then praise, thats how I do it, I rescue dogs and that works pretty well on adults and puppies. Keep on using the phrase you want from then on.

A lot of people apparently don't realize that dogs don't actually know words. Just take it outside and reward it when it's done. Eventually, they'll learn to sit at the door when they have to go.
