I just bought 2 new laptops and they came with Windows Vista and I HATE it.
I want XP.
I have an XP Upgrade disc but I can't use it with Vista because you can't upgrade backwards, I guess.
Do I have to get an older verison of Windows; like ME, 2000, 98 etc. and then use the XP upgrade disc?
Can I use the upgrade on both laptops or will I need 2 discs (the same thing with getting the older OS?

OR

Is there another way to down grade from Vista to XP without spending $100 or more????

HELP!!!!!
Is there any place

Make sure your computers systems are fully compatible with Windows XP before you down grade by installing Win XP.

The Windows XP Upgrade disks were full installation disks, but you may want to be careful and make sure you choose 'to do a FULL INSTALL'.
Upgrade Disks only checked your system to see if you had a legally installed version on them already before upgrading so they did not have to install their entire software pack over them again.

You may have conflicts with Vista if you don't do a complete Format reformatting the C:\ drive first before installing WinXP.

An upgrade disc of Windows XP is all you need. You will need to set your BIOS to boot from the CD drive before you start. Press F1 or Delete key to do so while the machine is in the start up screen.
Make list of which drives are set in the boot first, second, and third so you can reset them back to the way they were in boot sequence.
First boot is usually hdd or hdd0, second is usually CD-ROM, and third, (if you still have one) is usually Floppy. Switch first boot to CD-ROM, second to hdd which was in the first boot space and you are good to start.

After your installation is complete return to the BIOS settings and restore the HDD you are using to First Boot, CD-ROM to second.

You may need to run Format on your C:\ drive, when you start up the machine with the WinXP. Format and then install Windows XP. The code key will be needed from the Upgrade disc package as before.

After your installation is complete return to the BIOS settings and restore the HDD you are using to First Boot. Make list of which drives are set in the boot first, second, and third so you can reset them back to the way they were in boot sequence.

I ended up with Vista the same way, purchase of a new PC. The learning curve isn't large. My two biggest frustrations with it were 1) the amount of software I had that wouldn't run on it and had to be replaced at great expense and 2) the capabilities that were taken away when functions were rewritten. An example of the second is that I must have been the only person who wanted to be able to search for a file based on last accessed date, because you can't do it in the new Search.

Each 'downgrade' will need a separate licence, so one copy of XP wont do, in your case, you need a copy of 98/ME or 2000 for the 'upgrade process (you cant upgrade from 2000 to XP Home).
