..without going into a program? In other words, doing it yourself. It is not serious yet but I want to stop it before it becomes serious.

no but seriously, it's the same as any other addiction, such as smoking. the best way for one person might not be so great for another person. but there are support groups that you can call/join, and i'm sure there are tons of online communities of ex-gamblers that can help you out

The best way to stop a gambling addiction is to go cold turkey and to never gamble again. You have proved that you cannot handle it (and it takes a person that knows themselves very well to make that decision).

The best way to stay off is to join a support group like Gamblers Anonymous. The organization is the same one the created AA and usually, they use the same book only they substitute the word gambling for drinking.

You need help to face your addiction and that requires a plan. The proven plan uses the AA organization and its plan. The program works for most forms of addiction. There is even an Overeaters Anonymous group for people who don’t just eat too much, but are addicted to eating.

admitting you have a problem is the first step. Congratulations! I would highly recommend a program... just to be able to talk to others with similar issues.... they follow the simple 12 step program that most addiction programs follow.... but it is okay to go to meetings - you can do one once a month. Cold turkey is hard if it is truly an addiction.... and the desire will actually build up until one day you blow it all on the addiction.... so look up GA and find a sponsor that you can call... it really is okay and you are helping yourself, your future, your family.... and your life.

Gambling is very addictive. Certain casino games such as video poker are highly addictive, and are designed as such. Huge, fancy casinos are not built with the proceeds from soft drink sales, you know. They are built because gamblers such as you are willing to regularly give the casino your money.

It is important for the problem gambler to understand that casino gambling is a game that cannot be won. While gamblers do occasionally have winning sessions, over time they will lose because the overall odds are against them. The casinos design the games, not the gambler --- do you think the casino has any longterm positive expectation games? You may win now and again, but over time the law of averages will kick in and the casino will take your money. The only gamblers in the U.S. who make money are those who write books and/or sell programs telling others how to beat the casinos. Notice that these gamblers who can tell you how to beat the casino are making their money with books or programs, not with casino gambling.

If you are not willing to go to Gambler's Anonymous, then the next best thing would be to take on a major project that will occupy all of your spare time. This needs to be something that you can really sink your teeth into, such as a major home improvement or something very intensive at your workplace. Or volunteer your time with your church or a community organization.

Once you have gone for a while without gambling, you will notice an improvement in your personal finances, and you will also learn that you were able to survive without it. Gambling is like smoking --- you need to take it one day at a time. Survive each day. Don't gamble just for today.

Impulsive desires to gamble come and go. Each time you feel the sudden urge to go to the casino, get busy on your project. Wait the impulse out --- do not sucumb to it. You will be surprised to discover that if you are able to wait it out, later on you will not feel the urge. This will help you make it through just today.

Then you chain one day to the next, and to the next, and to the next. Before long, you will have gone a week without gambling. But even then, do not look ahead. Don't plan on going another week without gambling; instead, plan on surviving for just one day. Don't gamble for just today. When the urge hits you, and it will, wait it out, just for today.

When the urge hits you, do none of the things you used to do -- not even one. Don't go to the bank or the ATM. Don't go put gas in the car. Don't do anything to prepare for a run to the casino. Instead, plow head-first into your project. All you are trying to do today is (1) wait the urge out by staying busy, and (2) making it through JUST TODAY.

Continue to string the days together. You can do it. It is not easy, but gambling (and all other addictions) can be beaten by people who can summon the willpower to make it through JUST TODAY.

As time goes by, you will be surprised by the fact that your disposable personal income is more intact, and that you have more money to buy things for your family or yourself. You will also have more time, valuable time that can be spent on the things that are really important. Life is too short to waste any of it on addictive behavior. Don't be a prisoner or hostage to an addiction --- beat it by fighting it ONE DAY AT A TIME.

well...the obvious answer is to simply stop going...but then if it was that easy you wouldnt be asking....so...i would say find another hobby that you enjoy to do...preferably one that doesnt cost much money...and instead of going to gamble...go do your own personal hobby,...whether it be puzzles or doing yard work...whatever it takes to take your mind off of gambling...i hope that this helps because i have seen many people who ruined their lives because of gambling so its smart that you want to crush the habbit before it gets to large...GOOD LUCK!!! :)
