That I've heard several different explanations for this is why I am asking.

Wow! You've gotten some very bad answers!
A strong atheist does not believe in any gods.
A weak atheist is one that does not believe in gods in particular. This usually mean agnosticism. But it could include such beliefs Buddhism and many New Age beliefs.
In general, I dislike the term as it is confusing an sort of insulting. It has generally fallen out of favor since the '90's.

A strong atheist says I believe there is no God.

A weak atheist says I do not believe there is a God.

An agnostic says I do not know if there is a God.

An ignostic says I don't care.

A Humanist says the existence of Gods has no bearing on ethics, and right and wrong are known by human experience and intelligence so the existence of God has no interest.

A theist says there is a God who is revealed in words.

A deist says there was a creator who is not revealed in words.

A pantheist says whatever God may be, he is everywhere and in all things.

A polytheist says there are many gods.

A henotheist says there are many gods, but ours is on top.

The founding fathers of the US were mostly deists. So were Voltaire, Locke, Hobbes, and most other Enlightenment thinkers. The Old Testament is henotheistic.

A strong atheist believes that there are no gods.

A weak atheist doesn't believe in any gods.

Its very subtle, but important difference. The strong atheist will state that no deities exist, nor could they possibly exist. The weak atheist simply hasn't been given enough evidence for god(s) and therefore doesn't believe.

Well the explanation I've heard is that strong atheists want to get rid of religion all together, while weak atheists don't really care if religion is around or not. I am in the middle of this. I dispise religion but I don't care what religion a person is, it doesn't matter to me if your christian, muslim, jewish, pagan, buddhist, hindu, etc. Hell you could believe in the greek or roman gods and i wouldn't care.

Strong Atheist- Believes that there is no God, no matter what. God could pretty much slap their face and they would see it differently. Weak Atheist- Dont think there is a God, but most of the time explore other theories.

Good question.

It would seem that a "strong" atheist is.....an atheist, meaning someone who does not believe in any god(s).

A "weak" atheist is unsure, and therefore is not truly an atheist, but is more appropriately called an agnostic.

A strong atheist believes that there is evidence that supports the non-existence of god.

A weak atheist says there is no evidence for the existence of god so there is no god.
