She used to be a prominent part of a religion that I won't name for fear of a lack of an honest answer. Why was she written out?

Okay, we obviously have no biblical scholars here tonight... Asherah used to be God's wife, can anyone tell me why she was written out of the Tanakh (Old Testement, for you christians).

I'm not saying she was real, I'm just asking why she was written out and if you think the big three religions would be the same if she hadn't.

Sawyer, you are almost correct... Asherah is actually the main wife of El, aka YHVH, aka God. She used to be in the Tanakh, but was written out as the Jewish changed their view of women, just as Mary was once the beloved disciple, but later her book was attributed to John (how this makes sense, I don't know... I've never known a male Jew who calls another male Jew "beloved" unless it was his own child).

There is a lot of debate around that question. More and more, scholars and archaeologists are finding that Asherah was actually worshipped alongside or prior to the worship of the male god YHVH.
It seems that in the course of jewish history, the priests and scribes began to write her out in favor of the male.
It's not clear as to why this was done. Assumptions can only be made at this point.

I beg to disagree with the guy on top of me. For one thing, he does not mention a verifiable source for his opinion.

Asherah was not God's wife. She was the goddess of the Phoenicians and Syrians, taken over by the Israelites when they fell into idolatry. Images representing this goddess whose worship was lewd and associated with Baal (Exodus 34,13; 1 Kings 16, 29-33). My source is more authoritative.
Peace and every blessing!

She is the ancient Ishtar, also known as Asheroth. Fertility goddess of ancient Caanan. Judaism is based on a masculine diety.
Ba'al was Asherahs' cohort.
