Because there are many narrow minded people in the world. A large portion of these people (I'm gonna get a butt load of thumbs down for this) are self-proclaimed Christians that hide behind their God blanket. They refuse to have an open mind when another person of a different belief poses a question or opinion. They cannot defend their own answer or back up their belief, so instead of giving an educated point of view, they turn to childish name calling and threats (ie. you're going to burn in hell) and give people thumbs down. It is the same thing as holding their breath and stomping away.

And, yes, I am a Christian.

some people think that they don't have a right to an opinion and that their own opinion is the only one that counts.
I find here that some people just like to annoy others.
So they put out a question that will spark a response in a select group of people so they can pick on them.
I will say that if they were face to face with those people the would probably say nothing. These people are very brave hiding with anonymity behind a computer

There are a lot of childish people in this section. I've had my answers thumbed down when I wasn't offending anyone. As for the truth, it's more in how you say it and not what you say.

I am a Catholic Christian. I have given some atheist thumbs up if I felt their answer was courteous and sincere and it applied to the question.
However, when someone gives a "cute" answer
I will give thumbs down.

sopwebservant you have very strange beliefs- I have never read this is the bible. True Christians respect others and their beliefs and simply try to guide them. A true Christian would never say what you have said about non- Christians, they have very valued opinions and should be respected for their beliefs and choices. You do not sound like you are a true practising Christian

Actually I hear a lot of criticism of Christians on this sight as well. Maybe it's because Christians are able to use scriptural refrences available to them and non Christians do not have such a text to quote from.

Of course they are equally valid.

But I honestly see that thumbs up/thumbs down thing go both ways. Apparently a lot of people use it as an agree/disagree tool.

Everyone's personal beliefs are equally important as everyone else's. Thank goodness "thumbs down" isn't a true judgment. Regardless of our individual beliefs we are all equals and brothers in the eyes of the Lord and not a single one of us should ever pass judgment on another. Someone else has that job and, personally, I don't want it.

Christians get the thumbs down too. I once asked a question about which religion people were and all the ones who said Christians had like 3 thumbs down. Shoot, this will probably get a thumbs down by a non Christian

This works both ways.

The numbers of thumbs up or down depend upon who is reading the question and how much they agree/disagree with the answer they're reading.

If you haven't noticed this, try reading a wider variety of questions.
