Scientology, which questionably calls itself a new "religion", is the brainchild of science fiction writer & occult enthusiast L. Ron Hubbard. The organization claims to be able to help rid members of any & all mental constraints including but not limited to emotional scarring (from this & "past" lives) due to "engrams" (past negative experiences stored in our unconscious mind), psychological disorders & chemical imbalances (the solution is to convince members that these things don't actually exist) & drug dependence (including legally prescribed psychopharmaceuticals which counteract the effects of psychological disorders Scientologists believe to be nonexistent).

The official Scientology organization is composed of a number of “levels”. One begins as a “preclear” & works their way up. One must purchase virtually every service crucial to advancement directly from the "church" & at staggering prices. "Auditing", for example, is purchased in 12½ hour blocks, costing anywhere from $750 for introductory sessions to between $8,000 & $9,000 for advanced sessions. Visit this link to see how $380,000 is a conservative estimate for the total cost of moving all the way up the Scientology hierarchal ladder: http://www.xenu.net/archive/prices.html
These are the total costs for auditing alone: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientology_as_a_business#Costs
Here’s an explanation of what “auditing” is: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20061224182319AA2nnd6

At level OT III (Operating Thetan 3), some very strange & fiercely guarded secrets are imparted upon worthy members who have paid enough money to advance to such a level (and no, this isn't a joke): the evil alien ruler Xenu killed millions of aliens (Thetans) from around the universe by kidnapping them, bringing them to earth in golden DC-8 “space-planes” & blowing them up inside volcanoes with hydrogen bombs. Scientologists believe the souls of these aliens (these souls are "Body Thetans") were captured, brainwashed & released; they then attached themselves to our ancestors (who passed them all the way down to us) & cause many of our mental & physical ills to this day. Auditing is said to “clear” us of these Body Thetans as well as the “mental implants” they supposedly impose on our minds. http://sf.irk.ru/www/ot3/spaink-ot3.html http://xenu.net/archive/leaflet/Xenu-Letter.pdf

Scientology has taken a very hostile stance towards psychiatry & psychiatric drugs irrespective of the fact that some people require medication to remain adequately functional during everyday life. They don’t recognize legitimate conditions like autism, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, etc, and the “church” has been known to withhold prescription pharmaceuticals from member (often with harmful & deadly results). Suspiciously, it was discovered upon Hubbard’s death that the anti-anxiety drug hydroxyzine (Vistaril™) was present in his body, which several of his assistants would later attest was only one of many psychiatric & pain medications Hubbard ingested over the years. http://www.clambake.org/archive/ronthenut/16.gif
(visit this link to read about the uses of hydroxyzine: http://www.drugs.com/mtm/v/vistaril.html )

To be blunt, Scientology is a cult. It employs semi-legitimate psychotherapy & self-help methods to keep people loyal & convinced of its merit while it simultaneously sucks them dry financially & attempts to keep them far away from ANYONE, even friends & family, who would dissuade them from remaining in such a harmful situation. It’s a particularly greedy as well as manipulative & dangerous cult that takes its anti-psychiatry fanaticism to deadly limits. See this link for more information: http://www.lisamcpherson.org/

Scientology teaches that mankind is an immortal being (called a Thetan) not originally from this planet that is trapped by matter, energy, space, and time (MEST). Salvation for a Scientologist comes through a process called 'auditing,' whereby 'engrams' (basically, memories of past pain and unconsciousness that create energy blockage) are removed. Auditing is a very lengthy process and can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. When all engrams are finally removed, the Thetan can once again control MEST instead of being controlled by it. Until salvation, each Thetan is constantly reincarnated.

Scientology is a very expensive religion to associate with. Every aspect of Scientology has some sort of fee associated with it. This is why Scientology's "pews" are filled only with the wealthy. It is also a very strict religion, and very punitive against those who would try to leave behind its teachings and membership. Its "scriptures" are limited solely to the writings and teachings of L. Ron Hubbard.

Yeah I'm also from the UK and heard about them too.

They believe humans are the offspring of giant brown lizard people from outer space or something weird like that.

Plus the religion is totally made up-it was invented 30 years ago or so by some american muppet called Elron Hubbard.

Like most American things money figures in it-you have to pay(or donate as they call it) to learn 'the truth'.So most scientologists are rich.It attracts a lot of dim movie stars like Tom Cruise.

Basically it's a trendy cult for Americans who have more cash than brain cells.

you are able to connect the Church of Scientology given which you're prepared to spend a large number of money... usually achieving the better stages of "enlightenment" expenses contained in the ballpark of $230,000. Spirituality may be undesirable sufficient with no need to pay for it! and that i think of to procure it blended up. In Scientology, the immortal alien non secular beings (thetans) are not our souls, particularly they hang to our souls and are the reason of melancholy, soreness, misery, rigidity, and so on. the assumption is which you would be able to degree the quantity of thetans linked to you and then pay money to have them got rid of. The greater loose you're of thetans, the lighter your non secular burden, or some comparable hokey nonsense. you comprehend, as do maximum folk, that Scientology is a rip-off. So why even hassle? it is likewise a unfavorable enterprise which tries to insert itself into politics, sues each individual that places them in a damaging gentle, and greater than a number of different those that leave the church take place ineffective or murdered presently afterwards... Scientology is honestly the final difficulty you will desire to connect, technology fiction aficionado or no longer. in case you experience like an alien soul trapped on earth, there are possibly greater effective cults you are able to connect. correct in spite of the indisputable fact which would be to seek for a psychiatrist.

For whoever said the thing about everyone commiting suicide, that was HEAVENS GATE you moron get your facts straight.

Most Scientologists do not believe the crap they learn in Flag, Florida (it's like the equivalent to the Vatican but for Scientologists). Most people are attracted to it for its morals and ethics, not for the scifi stuff. Being very familiar with a ton of Scientologist, I can tell you that they are all rational people who haven't even heard of something called 'xenu'. The bad stuff you hear about them is PROPOGANDA. I'm not saying there aren't any crazy Scientologists out there (trust me there are) but then again there are some crazy Muslims out there, crazy Christians.... you can't just judge a religion by the stupidity of a few crazed followers.

edit: just so you know whoever said that mistrusting psychiatrists is stupid, consider this. Someone I am very close to helped uncover a clinic a while back that horribly abused its patients. Not saying that they're all like that, but this isn't reasonless mistrust.

Well lets put it this way. Once upon a time (this is a true story, by the way) there was a very bad wizard (really) named Alister Crowley. He did Dark Magic. One of his followers named L. Ron Hubbard stated the church of Scientology. Need I say more? Don't follow it. There may be some truth in parts of it, but you will find truth in many places. Still doesn't make it something to follow. Bad idea. Also Howard was insane. One of the ideas in his religion is to not trust psychiatrist. And mostly he did it to get money from the followers. No rational person would get involved with it. Crowley was an very evil man, and Howard was insane.

All you wanted to know about Scientology was explained in that episode of Southpark. If you want to know where it came from find a copy of the book Dianetics. Although a great story, it is actually how they conduct themselves (audits and theten levels) and what they believe in. Spooky stuff.
