How do you get energy out of dead batteries?

Assuming it's not a rechargeable battery...

Batteries produce electrical power by chemical reaction. As with many chemical reactions heat can increase performance.

A battery being used in a cold environment will last for a much shorter time then one being operated in a warm environment (I'm often in exceptionally cold places and we have serious problems with battery powered devices, usually batteries for portable devices are worn in pouches next to the skin to keep the batteries warm).

If you can warm the battery up you'll get more power from it.

If it's completely spent it doesn't matter what you do with it - like I said, it's a chemical reaction and once the reaction has finished that's it.

hit them hard enough to dent, but DO NOT break it.

like the other person said, energy in batteries are from chemical reactions. Hitting dead batteries will shake the chemicals enough to squeeze a very (very) short-lived energy burst from it.

of course when all the chemicals have reacted and are totally spent, you wouldn't be able to get anything out of it.

About the only thing left to do when they're dead is burn them and get a little heat energy out of them, but that isn't necessarily a good idea.

I read recently that you can use a pencil eraser and rub it over the connections and that will give you more "energy", not sure if it will work or not but my source was legitimate!
