Having taken Kasey C's good answer into account, I have worked with heroine users - there is always the risk that they will return to it - many of them - like alcoholocs say you never really get over it. If you are bothered by the person - don't take the risk. Is the person the children's father? If not why do they see them on a regular basis? Think about what's best in the long term, and try to work towards it.

While heroin users don't exactly hang a sign that says that they are a user, there are some signs that may give you some hints. However, these are just signs.

* Acting lethargic or drowsy, slurred speech
* Constricted pupils that do not respond to changes in light
* If using heroin in powder form then redness and raw nostrils from inhalation, possible nosebleeds
* Track marks on their arms (scars) or other parts of the body indicating injection use, fresh marks
* Sweating, vomiting, coughing and sniffling; twitching; loss of appetite, especially after the high

IMHO, your best option is to pull him aside and ask him point blank "Are you clean? I would not want my kids near you if you are not, and I think you understand why. Look me in the eye and tell me."

You could try parenting for a start. If you don't want your kids visiting a heroin user then don't let them do it. If you want to allow access then insist on being there to supervise your children. Also learn the difference between controlled substances and the feminine version of hero. One is smack, the other is like Wonder Woman. Its an easy mistake to make.

I don't think there is any way to know. Even if they have not had any for a long time, they still might go right back to it.
The daughter of a friend of mine died of a heroine over dose in Boston, MA. She had been there only a couple of hours and didn't have any trouble finding the drugs. She had been clean for some time (not sure how long). It was a pure shame, she was a lovely young woman with her entire future before her and poof it was all gone.

petition DHR or the court system that has order visitation with your children for him to be drug tested. IF you have reasonable proof that he is using or if you have a reliable source that says he is and is willing to give you a statement to that effect you should have no problems getting that person tested.

I was under the impression that one a person was a heroine addict that they never can get off the drug - therefore I'd say that you will never be able to trust this person to stay clean!

Hang out with them for about 4 hours without letting them leave your sight. You will know because they will start freaking out for their next fix.

Smack heads are usually pretty noticable from the state they appear to be in, the vacant stare, sunken eyes and shallow cheeks. Also they're usually desperate for money and do irrational things to get it.
