Methadone is not only good for treating heroin or other opiate addiction, it is often an effective pain management tool.
As for "treating" addiction, it provides an alternative, legal method to obtaining street drugs and thus assisting the addict in avoiding the criminal element to get his "fix". It is a substitute addiction. It allows the addict to avoid the physical pain of detox, without the high the heroin provide, but many patients are long term "methadone maintenance" patients.
As for pain management, it is usually prescribed for chronic pain patients who have grown tolerant to weaker narcotic painkillers, such as hydrocodone, oxycodone, etc. The effectiveness of pain relief varies with each patient. It is a very strong drug and should be taken only as prescribed.

It's the lesser of two evils.
Heroin and methadone work on the opiate receptors of the brain. They are responsible for the pleasurable feelings that the brain produces.
All narcotic pain relievers such as vicodin work by hijacking the opiate receptors. It's very effective for controlling pain.
Getting off opiods is tough. The withdrawl symptoms can cause seizures as well as death in some cases.
You need doctor supervision to detox after being on narcotics for a long time.
I wouldn't advise using it unless you absolutely have to.
Methadone isn't a good drug to be hooked on, but it's slightly less damaging than heroin.

In my opinion methadone is awesome.for me it has been a life saver, wether you need it for addiction or pain relief it works great for both.I have been on methadone(from a clinic) for 3 years now and it has totally turned my whole life around. If you need it for drug addiction i would definatley recommend going to a methadone clinic.Or if you just need it for pain you can get it thru your doctor.Hope this helped you out.

Methadone is a synthetic opioid,it is a great replacement for opioids when side effects have limited further dosage escalation.I have been trying to get my GP.or Neuro to prescribe it to me as I cannot take regular pain medication as it darn near kills me.I have Peripheral Neuropathy ( do not want it for drug addiction)from what I have read it has a very strong analgesic effect. Its a lot stronger than morphine but it also has side effects nausea, constipation, confusion, sedation and respiratory depression, does not mean you will have the side effects everyone is different.I hope this helps. GOOD LUCK....Liz.
