I have a tv/vcr combo that is hooked up to a dvd recorder. I had it hooked up to play dvd's through the tv, but it doesn't work to transfer vhs to dvd (and its not copyright, its a home video). I tried switching to the audio/video IN spots on the recorder, but then the tv doesn't recognize it. With the cords in the a/v OUT spots it seems like its recording but just shows black when i go to play it.

the dvd recorder should still work with a tv/vcr combo right?

You need to be able to play the video through the DVR (loopback) before you press that REC button.

From the VCR out ---> connect to DVR Input (say Line 1)
From DVR output ----> Connect to a TV input (say input 1)
Set the TV to the TV input you connected the DVR (input 1)
Set the DVR input to the input you connected the VCR (Line 1)

When you set play on the VCR you should be able to see the video on your TV (it goes to the DVR and back to the TV). Then press REC on the DVR.
