Leather man is a multi purpose tool with a knife attached to it

A leatherman is a multi tool. A knife is a single tool used for specific purposes. A Swiss Army knife is also a multi tool. To differentiate it from Swiss army knives they emphasised the "pliers" and it has marketed very well. Many companies make very many variations of multi tools.

Yes, but then knives are tools too. So are guns. If I were fixing my car, I want to use the proper tool, but in a pinch, I will use a leatherman. If I were going to take a life, a gun would be my first choice, but in a pinch, I can hunt with a slinshot, or defend myself with a fire extiguisher if I really had to.

I consider Leatherman Tools to be somewhere between gadgets and tools.

The things are useful in some situations, but unless you are McGiver, they will never replace a decent tool box.

Tool, for sure
It has a knife though, but it has a number of other very useful items. In fact, I just used the pliers to yank a pair of disk brake pads out on my mtn bike.
