I think your friend is mostly correct. Even better would be wait until the end of the year. In December and January, dealers will really be anxious to sell their 2007 models still on the lot.
But the absolute best time to buy a car is when you don't REALLY NEED to buy a new car. Do it when you want to buy a car, not after your old car has croaked and it will take a fortune to repair it. If you don't HAVE to buy a car, you can walk away from a deal you don't like. Trust me, if you dicker over a price and then walk away, when you come back in a week or two, you will be able to get a better price. the downside is that you might miss out on a car you really want to buy.
Good luck, and have fun shopping for your new car.

You're friend is correct. However, new 2008 Toyota's will start to be sold in July, you can go this early as dealers will be willing to lower the prices. The advantage of going early is that you will be able to get a Matrix with the exact amount of features that you want, because more selection will be available in the beginning. That is the downside of buying 2007 models in December 2007. They selection is always smaller and you may not get an important feature you really wanted.

Your friend is right. The 2008 model year starts on September 30 and the price on the 2007's will decrease dramatically.

Having been in the game selling many years i really think KYLS deserves your choice, she did everything right, had done her homework and not prepared to budge making the salesman make the last move.
As for when is the best time, with a dealer its 24/7.
Forget the myth's - end of month - Oct- Nov - special sales, meeting targets its all bull.
If I had to pick a best time to buy a vehicle it would be half hour before closing and the simple reason is some managers- salespeople and the business mgr have been on duty for 12 hours and just want out...
They really dont want or feel like working you over for the big profit having to stay to 10 or 10.30pm, they have a life also and want to go home...trust me on this one...
If you need some help getting value for your bucks go to my website http://www.usedcartips.org/ and study, KYLS did the homework and got a fair deal...good luck

Yes, it's been my experience as a titling clerk, that October and early November are the best months for purchasing new vehicles. The dealers are unloading the current year cars, making room for the next yr. If you insist on a certain model, I would purchase one that is 1-3yrs old, purchasing a new car of the lot, as soon as you drive off the lot, the value of the car dropped dramatically. You might as well buy one a couple years old, and save yourself several thousand dollars.

the best time is right before the new year dec 29-31 that is when dealers want to get the car off the lot so they don't have to pay for them the next year and they are not on the books. also they will be getting more new model cars in and need the room. good luck

Your friend is right. If you don't want to wait that long, you could also go at the end of the month (they'll want their figures up) or also end of financial year is also good (again for their figures). We bought our new car at 5pm on a Sat which was also the end of the month. We knew what we wanted so we just went straight up to the car & looked at it, asked for a test drive & asked for what we wanted. We didn't need the car & he couldn't match the deal we were after so we said no thanks. We were standing outside talking with our friends & he came outside. He asked what he had to do to get the sale & we told him if he offered us what we asked for we'd sign then & there (it wasn't much different to what he said he could do but because we didn't budge & were happy to walk away he had no choice if he wanted the sale). He took us back in & signed us up. No he didn't make what he wanted to out of it, but if he hadn't budged we would've walked away.
Moral of the story - know what you want & what you're going to pay for it. Don't be unreasonable with what you're asking for or you have no chance getting it. Be prepared to walk away if you have to. If they know you're buying that car but it's only a matter of where, then they'll match any reasonable offer. End of the month is good - they get paid their commissions on the month's sales so 1 extra car might put them in the next bracket of bonuses. Don't be in too much of a hurry & you'll get what you want as long as it's not unreasonable.

True. Also go on rainy days (when mostly no one goes car shopping, they are willing to negotiate more with you) and late at night (when they are desperate to make a few sell if the day hasn't been successful)
