The metric system when applied to weapons and ammo is insanity at its best.
For example let me give you a comparisons.

The bullet diameter is measured at the widest part of the base diameter
And is written as a decimal of an inch or in metric as millimeter, it depends as to where you are in the world as to which is used.
The 30 caliber as used in the 30-06 or 308 is in inch .308 diameter where as in metric it is referred to as a 7.62mm.
But this system does not work out as well as it sounds.
The decimal of an inch works out better because .308 will always be .308.
*** US 30 Caliber***
30 Carbine = .308.
30-30 Winchester = .308.
30-40 Krag = .308.
30-06 Springfield = .308.
300 Winchester Magnum = .308.

Where as the metric or millimeter seems to fluctuate from country to country and some times even in the same country.
***Russia***
7.62mm Russian Nagant revolver round in inch is .308.
7.62mm Russian Tokarev pistol round in inch is .307.
7.62 x 39 Russian assault rifle round in inches is .310.
7.62 x 54R Popular Russian sniper rifle round in inch is .308.

***Czechoslovakia***
7.62 x 45 Czech in inches is .309.

*** watch the metric designation change and the inch goes crazy***
7.5 Swiss in inch is .317.
7.5 x 53.5 French MAS in inch is .308.
7.5mm Swedish Nagant Revolver in inch is .325.
7.63 Mauser in inch is .308.
7.65mm French Long MAS in inch .309.
7.65 x 54 Mauser in inch is .313.

Now the 7.92mm
7.92mm Cetme in inch is .312.
7.92 x 33 Kurz in inch is .323.
7.92 x 57R Schwarzlose in inch is.312.
7.92 x 61 Norwegian Long in inch is.312
7.92 x 57 Mauser in inch is .323 (also known as the 8 x 57 Mauser)

All listed info comes from
The Handloader’s Manual of Cartridge Conversions ( Third Edition )

***insert pulled from the web***
For 7.92 X 57 or aka 8mm Mauser,
The 7.92x57mm J denotes the original cartridge with a .318-inch diameter bullet and moderate pressure limits
The 7.92x57mm JS designates the later, higher pressure cartridge with a .323-inch bullet. The letter 'J' is actually not a 'J' at all, but an 'I' for 'infanterie'. However, at the time the German printers were using a typeface in which the letter 'I' looked like the modern 'J'. The letter 'S' stands for Spitzgeschoß (pointed bullet), and the English word "spitzer" is derived from this German term.
The American standardizing body for sporting cartridges SAAMI designates this latter cartridge as the 8mm Mauser, also known as 8x57mm JS

Actual bullet (and barrel groove) Diameter: 7.92 x 57 IS = 8.2 mm (.323 in), 7.92 x 57 I = 8.07 mm (.318 in) Diameter of barrel, land to land: 7.92 x 57 IS = 7.89 mm (.311 in), 7.92 x 57 I = 7.80 mm (.307 in)

This was not meant to confuse you just show there are some serious deviations in play.
I do hope this was of some help.

The odds are rather good that Mohammed knew all that before his dreams. You have to keep in mind that Mohammed was a well rounded man that was exposed to many ideas from around the area. Being a diplomat, he was familiar with the regional governments, being a merchant he was familiar with the regional customs, and being a philosopher he pondered such notions. Also consider that Mohammed was around 40 years old when he started dictating the Qur’an, so he had been exposed to much of the regions great thinkers.

I'm not sure, but the bore diameter on the IS should be considerably more than your listed number, and I think the original bore size was 7.92mm, or about .310". I'd check, but my 7.92x57IR (the bottom of a drilling) is at my brother's house. Why they only changed the I to IS designation without changing the number designator is anybody's guess.
