Not existing is nothing to fear. You already did it for hundreds of billions of years. In fact the amount of time you have existed is an extremely small amount of time compared with the time that has already passed. Find wonder in the fact that of all the matter and energy in the universe you are that almost infinitessimal part that is currently alive. And find wonder in the fact that the stuff you are made of has been part of other living creatures, probably millions of them, and will become part of other living creatures after you are through with it.
While fear of dying might be rational, particularly in some traumatic or painful manner being dead is nothing to fear. Again, you've done it before.
As for purpose, that's up to you to find. You have the choice to become a productive member of society in any of thousands of ways. Or you can shack up in Montana and write your manifesto. It's your choice. You are writing the story of your life every day.
What you should fear is not death, but living a life that is less than you could have made it.

Humans were not created to live and die although many religious groups teach such a thing. Some truly believe that earth is merely a "testing ground" and that we were never meant to stay here. They teach that death is a friend - a door to another life - a better life - in heaven.
It does not seem as though you are afraid of death. It seems as though you simply do not want to die. Perfectly understandable. You are feeling precisely what you are meant to feel. We were created to live, not to die. We were created with the desire to live. That is what you are feeling. That is what every relatively healthy human being feels: a strong desire to live - always.
Our purpose is quite simple, really. Our purpose is to live forever in happiness and perfect health on earth. This is not a testing ground. This is our home. And we can stay here, living in perfect health and happiness, in peace and security without growing old. We have the opportunity to do that forever.

The Scriptures teaches us that we as saints are not dead, but only asleep. Immediatedly when we demise, we go into the presence of God. For those who are not saved, there is torment. Phillippians makes us know that at the Coming Of Christ, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, we shall be changed; This mortality, will put on immortality. We shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. Our bodies will no longer be flesh, and blood, but we will have a Spiritual Body, Like Christ. The dead in Christ, will rise first; Then we which are alive, will be caught up together in the clouds, to meet Him, in the air. Oh What A Glorious Day That There Will Be!

Because God made us in his image and part of that is the natural instinct to "WANT TO LIVE", not die. When you die your spirit goes out, and you go back to your ground. Your thoughts do perish. Psalms 146: 3-6
Ecclesiastes 9:5 -- For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten. (Contrary to false religious teachings, hell is not a place where folks roast and burn endlessly; Hell is the common grave for mankind)
If a man dies and simply goes to the grave, what hope is there for the dead?
Answer: During his earthly ministry Jesus Christ showed his power over death, actually bringing dead persons back to human life. (Luke 7:11-16; John 11:39-44) He thus provided a preview of what he will do on a grand scale in God’s new system of things. The heartwarming prospect is that then hell, mankind’s common grave, will be emptied of its unconscious dead. (Revelation 20:13) Some receive a resurrection to heavenly glory as spirit creatures, even as did Jesus Christ. (Romans 6:5) However, the vast majority of mankind will be brought back to enjoy life on a restored earthly paradise.—Acts 24:15; Luke 23:43.
In God’s new system the resurrected dead, if they carry out God’s righteous laws, will never need to die again. (Isaiah 25:8) Certainly this grand provision for blessing mankind is reason for us to take in more knowledge of Jehovah and his Son, Jesus Christ. Doing so can lead to our eternal life and blessing.
Just imagine no sickness, no crime, no disease, no sadness, no depression, and the last that will be removed is death itself-----after Armageddon. Where do you stand? Where do you want to stand?
God Bless

Existence is all you know. The concept of not actually existing is almost impossible to get your mind around. I do not fear this because I have faith in Jesus and I know where I am going. If atheism is true and there is no afterlife, then there is no purpose. If we are created, then there is something more after we die and we have a purpose. No God, no hope.

This is a hope, and promise for Christians, that we will not die but live forever. The purpose of life is to know God and to live with Him for eternity in the presence of His Light, Love and Life.

Your response is interesting: why should not existing be so difficult for you? The universe existed for huge amounts of time before you arrived. It will just be like that again.
In your situation I fear that you're in danger of clutching at nonsensical straws like religion just to comfort yourself, and that's not a good way to find reality.
If it really bothers you, perhaps you could arrange for a general anaesthetic, just so you can experience not existing for a short while. It won't hurt.

it is human nature to desire a continuing existence. no one really knows what happens after dead and this scares the hell out of them. we like to know what we are getting into. this is really why the concept of an after life is so important in so many religions. what you think happens to you after death really depends on your religious stand point. no one can give you a real answer.

Our built in instinct is to survive.
Our purpose is to survive and reproduce.
Our purpose is to protect and raise the young to survive.
That's when it really gets complicated. LOL!
Oh I think there is more to it than this but hey... conversation.
Peace and survival!
