Millie:
A few considerations: Honda makes great cars, but the purchase price for a hybrid is much more than a standard Civic.

So figure out the 'payback' period. That is, the difference in the price between the hybrid and standard Civic, and how long it will take to 'break even' with the gas savings. If you drive a lot of miles, the payback will be realized sooner. If relatively few miles, the gas savings will not be a significant factor. For example, the hybrid might cost $5K more than the standard. How long will it take to repay that difference in gas savings? Probably many years!

Another thought is maintenance. Hybrids are going to cost much more to repair if something 'big' breaks, like the battery pack or the electric motors. While under warranty, you are in good shape, but later, it could get very expensive. Standard Civics are very reliable and will go without major repair for at least 200K miles. Normal maintenance is not too expensive. I am not certain that can be said for the hybrid.

I am holding off on buying a hybrid until they have about 10 years of use. That brings me to last point, the earliest hybrids that I have seen are from the late '90's and Civic was not one of them.

It is very easy to research on the Internet when these were introduced. But I have not heard of a 94 model hybrid.

Good luck,
Marc

Hondas and Toyotas are great vehicles have had toyota corollas camrys body's rotted before any engine problems living in NY the winters all were running when junked they just would not pass inspection because of body rot these cars were basically maintained. My 1995 corolla lasted 8 yrs. I presently have a 1998 honda civic with 190,000 miles body is shot but engine still strong one thing needs changing about every 80-100,000 miles is timing belt and water pump all done at the same time. Great overall vehicles but always negotiate price when buying a car, there should be wiggle room with that age car and the mileage. Also ask for any service records hope that helps
