Baptizm is an outward sign of an inward committment. It doesn't get you saved or into Heaven. It is a sign to everyone that you have made a personal committment to God. Infant baptism is practiced by some churches to "save" the baby in case it dies. God is never going to send a baby (or child) to Hell. Jesus told us to repent and be baptized. Even He was baptized by this cousin as an example for others to follow.

Baptizing is showing God that you are a part of his family. Not being baptized is like joining a club without being initiated.
Also, after being baptized with the baptizimal water, it represents a new begining and being clean from original sin.
(Original sin is explained in the first chapter of Genisis)

you tell god you are going serve for the rest of your life in prayer. the baptism is to show others you have made this dedication. some believe that baptism washes away sins. i think jesus died for our sins. some believe that if you are baptized you are always free from sin. however if you commit a murder after being baptized you are going to pay(wouldn't you agree) and even hitler was baptized

Submit to baptism with water in order to be a disciple (a follower) of Christ. God baptizes believers with the Holy Spirit. You are a son of God by faith in Jesus Christ and because you are a son, God gives us His Holy Spirit to indwell us and seal us as a gurantee of our salvation untill the day of redemption.
Read the book of Galatians and the first half of the book of Romans to understand this better.

Baptism is symbolic. Once you have been "born again" (by accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior) you are to be baptized symbolizing putting to death the "old man" (the sin nature) and resurrecting the "new man" (we are new creatures in Christ Jesus old things have passed away, behold all things have become new). I believe that you really do put to death the old man when you are baptized! It is also a sign of obedience to Jesus!

Their are 2 kinds of baptism the one your thinking of is in obedience to God and that is under water. It is an outward sign to the world of an inward and invisible grace that has happened to the heart of the believer in God. the other is baptism into the power of Gods Holy Spirit its a gift from Him

Baptism is best described as an outward expression of an inward condition. It's about standing in front of your peirs/the public and saying I believe that christ has died for me washed away my sins. Its not really a covenant but a physical act that shows you have made a covenant. It is not required for salvation in that it doesn't mean that your not saved till you go in the water... but it is a commandment from Jesus so when one gets saved they want to please the lord and once they know what baptism is they should have a desire to get baptised... it is a wonderful Thing and I completely encourage everyone who can truly understand what God has done for them to get baptised.

It is generally viewed as a promise, yes.
Basically the parents say "Ok, god, we promise you that you can have this kid's soul, and we're going to raise him/her to believe that you exist."
I think it makes more sense to let the kid make their own decisions when they're at a far more rational age, but that's just me.

Baptism is a ceremony in which one enters the church family. it is a way of showing that you have been washed free of sin and death and rising from the dead of Jesus Christ.
This came from The Inspirational Study Bible by Max Lucado.
