Well, as a Christian who reads Genesis figuratively and as folklore, I got a chuckle out of some of these questions.
I'm particularly amused at the idea of God retrofitting Adam.

"So were they created at the same time (genesis 1) or was the man created first? (genesis 2)"
The latter. The first creation account gives a broad scope of the creation of the universe, while the second concentrates mostly on man. There meant to be complementary, not contradictory.
"Why didn't god realize Adam would need a woman before creating him? Why this two-step creation?"
Maybe He didn't want Eve to distract Adam while he was naming the animals?
"Wouldn't it make more sense to create them both from the same materials?"
"Why create people out of something at all? Weren't all other creations created from nothing? Couldn't god create them out of nothing too?"
Not really. He could have created either or both of them out of nothing at all. I'd say He chose the materials used to make a statement that there's supposed to be a connection between the creature and the material used.
"if the man was created first - did he have a functional reproductive system even before the woman was designed, or did god retrofit Adam later?"
I don't see why Adam wouldn't have a functional reproductive system. After all, God probably knew beforehand He was going to create Eve all along.

*according to the Bible, man was created first, then Eve was created second.
*Perhaps Adam wouldn't have cherished her as much if she had not come from is own body, therefore God would have had to wait. Quite seriously though, why even bother questioning something so small as this?
*Why would it make more sense to create them from the same materials? God is not governed by physics, nor by human ideas of what make sense. Do you think man and woman are identical, because I'd have to say there is a Great deal of difference between them. Also, another reason for him making Eve out of Adam's body instead of dust, see answer 2.
*He could have, but he just chose not too. Besides, if he hadn't, then we wouldn't have that snazzy little saying "ashes to ashes, dust to dust" Maybe he was thinking ahead to this :P
* I would imagine he was fully equipped, considering he had to pee after eating and drinking. Also, just because something has reproductive organs, it doesn't mean they will work, Mules have all the stuff, but still cannot produce offspring, perhaps it would have been along these lines with Adam before the creation of Eve. Or you could take the view that God knew Eve was going to be created, and so gave him everything to begin with.
All just speculation, honestly it is kind of insignificant anyway; we're here aren't we?

Adam was created first and after some undisclosed time, Jehovah decided that he had been alone long enough and Eve was created for mans sake.
Jehovah created male and female animals for the purpose of reproducing and filling the earth with there kind.
Since Adam was created in Gods image, Jehovah wanted to instruct Adam and teach him so he could share that knowledge with his wife and future offspring.
Eve was created from Adam's rib to show Adam that this was a special creation, one for his benefit, not hers.
As for your last question, yes, all plumbing was in tack and fully functional before Eve was created.

All is possible to God!
The Scripture is inerrant, infallible and on top of that, self-attesting.
Not all is revealed to us, but all nessecary for Salvation is revealed in the Holy Scripture.
Sola Scriptura!
Does it make a difference in what order they were created, does it make a difference how and by what they were created?
What makes a difference is; Do we bring Glory to God!
We should use our time constructive, instead of using time on trying to find a crack in the Scripture (which there is not. Few has an idea of how many man-hours there is well spent in interperting the Holy Scipture).
Seek instead to build up your knowledge of God, study the Scripture, and you will find your joy in pleasing God
Soli Deo Gloria

Was Adam created first or at the same time as Eve? If you have read the Bible (KJV, NIV) it will tell you that God put Adam in a deep sleep and took a rib from him...that is where Eve came from...the only reason why Eve was created was because Adam saw that the lions had mates, the birds had mates, the sheep had mates...everyone except him, and he was lonely, so God gave him a woman (girl power!!)
Haha..I like that "two-step creation"...God wanted Adam to ask for it himself...if God had known that Adam wanted a mate and just given him one right off the bat, what if Adam would have said " I'm not sure I want her." Adam asked of God and recieved...and God wanted Adam to realize need of companionship...companionship was the reason why God created man in the first place...He wanted to create people who loved Him, by their own choice...people who could share the beauty of Heaven with Him and His angels
should God have made Adam and Eve from the same material??? adam came from the dust of the earth...so if God took a rib from adam to create eve, were not they both of the same material : dust ...taking a part of Adam's body signafied that Eve was ONE with adam...just like husband and wife are supposed to be when they get married...she was of adam's flesh...there was no denying that she was his women (ya hird)!
So you would rather be created out of NOTHING! don't you take pride in knowing that you came from a person and didn't just pop out of thin air ( I hope u do anywayz) God created man in HIS OWN image. anytime there is an assimilation of another human being, what do they look like, do they look like dogs, do they look like vacuums, NO they look like us...in the same way that God made us to be like in him...we are more than just thin air, that's why there is the saying that our bodies are the temple of God...i don't know what you would want, but i'd rather be made in the image of God than just, POOF! God literally shaped and formed the mold for the human body with His hands...we were not just thrown together...we are the masterpiece of an artist... Michealangelo would have slapped you for this one!! lol
Yes of course man was made to reproduce when he was created...if God wanted PEOPLE to love Him and to be fruitful and multiply, don't you think He would have given them that ability...precisely why sex is pleasurable...God is smarter than us...He's like, why not have a little fun while populating my earth? today, is there any other way to create a human being without the spirm of a man...even a clone, was the clone of a person who came from the spirm of a man...so if eve hadn't of been made, trust me, God could have found some other way...but since God is just that: GOD, He made it all work out....your questions are cunning...People just have to be able to put their hands on something...there are tons of things that we will never know unless we ask God ( and unless we get to Heaven)...interesting questions!

1.Adam was created first, then God created Eve from his rib
2.of course,God always knew that he needed a woman, but he created him first and taught him everything....and then,he created Eve so that Adam would teach her and take care of her and develope love between them
3.the reason God created Eve from Adam's rib,to say that the man and his woman are considered as one, they belong to each other, and also to generate love,as u love sth that is already made from you,it's a part of you
4.all thinking creatures are made of sth(men from earth, angels from light, devils(gins) from fire) and every creature have the properties of what it's made of,so man was made from earth so he can connect to it,so he can live and work on it...and also when he dies,he decomposes to the earth..his origin
5.Adam did have his reproductive system, before Eve,he was created completely in the perfect image...even it's mentioned that ebles(satan) used to mock him, when God had created him but didn't gave him life yet,he would enter from his mouth and go out from his behind...as God knew the needs of his creature,he created Eve so they can live happily and produse the whole man race
hope i've helped

God did know he needed a woman for Adam, BUTeverything is in Gods time.
for the last questin, im not to sure about the reproductive system, but im pretty sure he could reproduce. i think this because God KNEW that he was going to create Eve. since God knows everything
i also do know that Adam was given Eve because he was lonely.
i hope this helped. God Blessâ¥

The whole sordid affair is a rather simplistic view of the cosmos by a bunch of bronze age nomadic preachers looking for the meaning of life. And it is no surprise they the got nothing right. How could they. I took us another 5000 years to start figuring it out despite religious opposition.

first God created Adam and Lilith, but Adam tried to "compel lilith (to sexual supplication) by force and she fled the garden of Eden. God then tried to make a second wife for adam, but he saw her being created and couldn't stand to look at her after that, THEN God created Eve
