sometimes they have a patch of grass in between the street and the sidewalk (atleast where i'm from), so they have to reach it with the sprinkler. but i think if you have the capacity to water only the grass, you should do so. even automatic sprinkler systems water the street sometimes. i think the English idea of having "lawns" should be over.
Maintaining a green lawn often requires large amounts of water. This was not a problem in temperate England where the concept of the lawn originated, as natural rainfall was sufficient to maintain a lawn's health. However the exporting of the lawn ideal to more arid regions of the world, such as the U.S. Southwest, has crimped already scarce water resources in such areas, requiring larger, more environmentally invasive water supply systems. Grass typically goes dormant during cold, winter months, and turns brown during hot, dry summer months, thereby reducing its demand for water. Many property owners consider this "dead" appearance unacceptable and therefore increase watering during the summer months.
Lawns cover a significant area in the United States. In a recent NASA-sponsored study, researcher Christina Milesi estimated the area covered by lawns to be about 128,000 square kilometers (nearly 32 million acres) making it the largest irrigated crop in the United States, about three times that of irrigated corn.
"American front lawns are a symbol of man's control of, or superiority over, his environment." - Virginia Scott Jenkins, in her book The Lawn: A History of an American Obsession (1994)

are you using too a lot water? you may want to opt to scatter some bags of compost -- compost acts like a sponge . you may want to deploy a french drain on the bottom, yet it really is dissimilar artwork for the kind of ordinary issue

So what if it's wasteful. I'm tired of being told what to do by a bunch of leftover's from the 60's. I pay for the water, if I want to waste it, I will. I don't recycle either.

I hate all that wasted water, too. But sometimes when it's hot outside I actually like to walk through the spray on purpose.

I see this often at local shops and businesses. I think that people should take action and save the water! This can also be a safety hazard for local walkers, joggers.

You see, they do it because they want to wash all of the loose grass off their lawn.
