ok so, i think i might have either pulled a tendon or brused the bone in my leg. i run about three times a week so i can improve my speed for next year and to keep in shape for basketball, lacrosse and volleyball. i know it really helps me, but the more i run the more it hurts, now it is even starting to hurt after my lacrosse games - any advice?

Have it checked out by a doctor so you can get any medications or treatments that will help you get better faster. Anyways, start out by walking 1-2 times/week. Progress to 3-4, and then gradually increase your speed until you are running at your normal speed. Oh and sit out from lacrosse or play less, because you DO NOT want to strain yourself and end up with a longer injury.

OR you could have a stress fracture...

No matter if it's a pulled tendon, a bruised bone, or a stress fracture, STOP RUNNING. See a doctor is good advice.

I was training for the San Antonio Marathon in 1988, same situation. Leg hurt deep inside just below the knee right from the beginning of a run. I suspected stress fracture but it didn't matter - the answer is to STOP RUNNING and give it a rest and time to heal.

Not doing so will only result in more pain and build up of scar tissue, plus, if it is bone related, maybe arthritis.

Good Luck

You should be more specific on where the pain is located. If its on your lower leg near the bone, then you have shin splints. A good way to check is to run your index finger along your leg right between the bone and the muscle. If it hurts then its shin splints. This is caused by over use or running on hard surfaces when your body is not used to it. Try running on softer ground like grass and cut back the intensity of your run until you feel better.

If running does not aggrevate the injury it's ok to run. From you own description it appears that running makes it hurt more so no you should not run. I suggest seeing a physical therapist or someone familar with running injuries. If you cannot run there are other ways to get in shape. Right now the running with this injury is only going to hurt you prospects in the other sports.

Go to a doctor to have it examined.

Some rest would help.
