to get its reproductive organs taken out (spayed or neutered, depending on the gender) so it cant have any puppies.

When people say 'fix' they mean neuter. This is the removal of the internal sexual organs of an animal to prevent them from having babies. Males are castrated, by removing their testicles, females are spayed by removing their uterus and ovaries.
There are many advantages to neutering (generic term for spay and castrate). As well as not adding to the overpopulation of unwanted pets, it removes unwanted sexual behaviour (like wandering in male cats, humping the sofa in dogs) and, most importantly, prevents many common and serious health problems in later life, particularly cancers.
Despite what people may tell you, it is NOT cruel to neuter an animal. Well it's a matter of opinion I suppose, but I can tell you from experience that animals do not seem to know what's happened to them when they wake up from the op.
I'm not keen on the term 'fix' actually - it suggests something was broken, which it wasn't!

Where a male dog can't make puppies and female dog can't have babies. Dog's are healthier and even live longer if they are fixed.

If your puppy is a female, then she will be spade. If you puppy is a male, then he will be nudered.
