What does she like? Is she into music? Art? Writing? Fashion? You need to find something that she loves, and then find a present that would relate to it. Be creative and don't stress too much. I am sure she would like anything- if it comes from your heart.
It doesn't even have to cost much. Set up a day for just you and her. Go on a picnic, etc.

17? Well uhhh think about what she likes. keep in mind you want something special but don't get something that is going to be exceptionally hard to top for her next birthday. Those kind of things you want to save for other moments like 1 year anniversaries, or moments when you in the doghouse ha ha ha. No seriously just don't get something cheesy. Cost isn't always everything its the quality that counts. Just keep that in mind and you should be good. If all else fails there is always roses and chocolate.

You should get her a nice gift certificate to a store she likes or a nice romantic CD or you two could enjoy a day out in the park taking pictures to reminisce just make sure she is happy SMILE I'm about to be 17 and this is what I would want!!!

Sincere words of tenderness and appreciation while out sharing a nice meal or while out on a scenic walk while holding hands.
Words are very powerful. " Things " are not always the way. Speaking from experience of having had " things " showered over me...yet the the trueness of the heart was not there.

It is very nice of you to remember your 6 months... how about taking her to a nice dinner and get her something that she can wear like jacket or shirt.
