The fish in lake systems bite all year round. The only things you need to consider are state/local regulations, spawning times, bite tendencies, structural locations and such. It's never too soon to start freshwater fishing. You only need to be aware of where fish are holding and how they are biting depending on variables such as spawn time, water clarity, temperature, etc....

blue cats will bite year round
also in mass. don't the lakes freeze over?
