Particularly in the Biblical world - from ancient times. I know that Job says God's ways are beyond our understanding, and that the suffering comes to Job because God has allowed Satan to test him.

But other than this answer of Job, what other answers have the people traditionally given to the problem of why do bad things happen to good people?

God could not create a world in which only love was present without any possibility of evil, because both require free will. A world with both love and evil is better than a world without either. Therefore, God is morally justified in creating a world that has evil in it.
Plus, just because God hasn't eliminated evil from the world doesn't mean He won't do so one day.

Parents are train their children the way they should go. Nurturing love.

God given conscience.

Land laws.

Natures laws.

Good & bad things happen to good & bad people. People just need to seek God to direct their path & keep them from evil. To not be at the wrong place at the wrong time. At times we may still be in the evil place & lose our life, but then if God directed you there, it is for the salvation of others. Then, even if you lose your life, you were at the right place at the right time, because people were saved.

By traditionally IGNORING the instruction book on how to over come evil, and that instruction book is the BIBLE! They turn to 'every wind of doctrine' for their salvation! They use every possible other source of knowledge, or wisdom, besides the Bible, even ancient mythologies, charms, idol gods, chants of black magic and sorcerers, to cast out evil!!! But can EVIL cast out EVIL? As Jesus told the Pharisees when He answered their comments that He was casting out devils by Beelzebub!

Saint Anselm suggested that evil is like darkness. It in and of itself is not a thing but rather the absence of a thing. Like darkness is an absence of light, evil is the absence of good.

Christ told his followers in the sermon on the mount to NOT resist evil-Unfortunately most Christians think it's their religious duty to do exactly the opposite--so you see them burning Harry Potter books---burning Beatles records--protesting against films like "Hail Mary"--& "The Last Temptation of Christ",bombing abortion clinics--without realizing that their actions actually promote the "evil" they are against!!

imagine the ying and yang symbol.
Now let's try and think of the dark and the light as good and evil.

Without evil in the good, you would not know the good is good, without good in the evil you would not know evil is evil.

this world is good and bad. sometimes it seems that good people have the worthiest luck... but god put us all throw trial in are life to see how strong are faith is to him. remember that god would never give us a trial that he didn't think we couldn't handle.
