Yes its fishing with your hands people feel around holes in rivers and lakes and let a catfish bite their hand and wrestle them in. Often people will set out boxes and such for fish to go in so they can grab them. It can be dangerous wading with snakes ,snapping turtles ,and alligators. You never know what will be in a hole in the muddy water . But that is what makes it fun

I would say they want it to be illegal because most people are getting spawning fish , The male catfish guard the nest and when they are caugth /noodled they are no longer there toi protect the nest.

Q. Why not open the season statewide and make it permanent?
A. To fulfill the Department’s mandate of protecting the forest, fish, and wildlife resources of Missouri, we must ensure that the seasons and methods recommended to the Commission are based on sound biological evidence and do not harm the resource. Because hand fishing targets the largest breeding catfish and those on the nest, sufficient concern exists to justify a conservative approach until a complete evaluation is conducted.

This site has the regulations for noodling for Missouri

Here in Oklahoma you can go to any lake or river this time of year and find noodlers. Noodling is basically swimming around trying to find a catfish spawning bed or hole usually found 2-7 ft deep. your goal is to find one of these holes where a female catfish has layed some eggs in a hole or depression where the male is protecting the eggs, what you do is stick you arm inside the hold and wait for the catfish to bite it and when it dose that that's when you grab it by its mouth and wrestle it out of the water. It bites you hand because its protecting the eggs.
It is probley illeagle in Missouri because taking the catfish out of the hole exposes the eggs to other predators so usually the eggs don't make it to adults lowering the catfish population. Another reason might bo because it is dangerous.

Yes, noodling is taking catfish by hand, getting in the water and taking them off their spawning nests.
It is illegal in MO because MO does not want the prime spawning males to be taken

Noodling is catching catfish with your hands, but I don't know why it would be illegal except for maybe harm coming to the noodler.

It is handfishing for catfish. You swim to the bottom and the cats bite your hand(dont worry, they wear gloves) and you haul them out. Its illegal because some catfish are bigger than you and will haul you out. Imagine having a 60 pound fish biting your hand and he doesnt like you. Underwater, fish are way stronger than you and will haul you into their nice little home and make you a floormat.

I have heard of this before.I think its when you get in a creek/stream or pond.
You then use your hand as bait and try to catch big 'ol catfish.
I know it sounds kind of nasty, but I am pretty sure thats what it is.
You have to wade around and reach into holes and creases in the bank edges...Not for me.

we noodled for cats and turtle both!
This method of "fishing" can be very harmful to a body of water if not regulated well!
