What are you hunting, the size game determine the caliber needed.
You don’t hunt squirrel with a 375 H&H and you don’t hunt deer with 22LR.

We need more info as to what you are hunting

Hockey F : a riffle, you really need to quit letting them use your head as a practice puck, and you may wont to avoid front row seating from now on.

This question is impossible to answer given the lack of data.

First need to know a few things:

What will you be hunting?

Are you hunting multiple animal types - such as black bear and dear, or Moose and Brown bear, or Dear and hogs??

What is the terrain going to be like? Will you be in deep heavy woods hunting dear? If so, then I recomend a 30-30.

Are you hunting dear from the edge of a clearing where there are potential shots of up to 300 yards? If so, I recomend a .270, 30-06, or even a 7mm Remington mag.

Do you want to use the gun for dear, varment, and small game? If so then a .243 is probably your best bet.

Your best source would probably be this website
http://www.chuckhawks.com/index2d.rifles.htm

It will give you a heads up on where to start.

My first rifle was a Remington 700 ADL in a .270 caliber. I bought the rifle and a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40 scope. The rifle was around $330, and I bought the scope new on ebay for ~$175. I have killed Antelope, Whitetail Dear, Feral Hogs, and Javalina with it. It shoots flat, and hits hard...

I had years of experiance shooting with my family and friends prior to my purchase...if you are a fresh beginer, you may want to start with a 30-30, a 7mm-08, .243, .308, as they will have a lower level of recoil, and that is important for begining shooters so that you do not develope a flinch or a general fear of high powered rifles.

If you are a true beginer, it may be a good idea to puchase a .17hmr or .223 to get some shots under your belt.

Regardless of what your choice is, have fun and stick with it...shooting and hunting are great sports.

P.S. Remington offers a model 710 that they offer in .243, .270, 30-06, and 7mm Remington mag and it comes with a cheap Bushnell scope. You can pick one up with a scope in the ~$300 range. Academy Sports sells them for $298 her in Dallas.
I have owned 2 of them. I took an Elk at 180 yards with my 710 model 30-06 three days after I bought it and sighted in the scope.

I'd suggest that a 28-bore shotgun mightn't be your best choice for cape buffalo, and a 470 Nitro Express could be a bit much for rabbits, and hard to hit a bird with. Firearms are tools, each with particular strengths, and the game you're hunting as well as the conditions you'll be hunting in will make a lot of difference in the firearm you choose.

What are you hunting for?? That will determine the proper caliber of rifle you need for a clean shot. The prices vary form state to state and dealer to dealer, so go to your local gun shops, check their prices and compare the makes.

The most popular hunting calibers are the .30-30, .30-06, and .270

I would go with a 30-06 or a .308 win because you can get a variety of ammo for it...a rifle starts at around $400 and goes up from there.

I suggest a .30-06. It is basic, and has the takedown power for most game you might hunt.
