I'm a single 22yo african american female and I wanted to take a trip to Australia and I heard that there is a little racism there.

Are the Locals very obvious about their disliking to blacks or do they just tend to ignore them.

I would love to go there but I don't want to feel uncomfortable or unwanted.

The vast majority of us are NOT racist.
You're going to get the lunatic fringe no matter where in the world you go.
I don't think you'll have anything to worry about when you visit us.
We're a friendly bunch.
You could have people tease you (in a jovial manner) about being a Yank but that's got nothing to do with the colour of your skin.
I hope you come and visit us and have a good time.
I believe the reports you've heard are totally over blown.

Black Americans are not more likely to face racism than Asians, Indians, Jews, Lebanese or Arabs/Greeks in Australia if they travel in Major cities. Therefore, Australia is multicultural and give you chance to do well in life as long as you work hard and mind your own business. But stay away from the supporters of Pauline Hanson and her likes and you will be fine. Many Aussies marry Asian and Blacks and have multicoloured kids!!

Well Missy doesn't know what she is talking about yes every country has some form of racism (ours from our colonial Heritage)but I was married to an Aboriginal man we never experienced blatant racism.
Also it would do well to remember we are have one of the most successful multi-cultural societies in the world. We are probably more likely to have a go at you because you are a Yank we don't care what colour you are.

you dont really have anything to worry about as you being African-American...you look totally different to the aboriginals in Australia and there is little chance of being confused with one.

im Australian, my husband is African-American and we have spent lots of time in Australia together...we moved to the US for in December for a few years and its here that we have experienced much more discrimination then what i ever experienced in Australia...

people in Australia were very accepting of our relationship, of him in general...over here its the total opposite. Yes, we do live in the south but we have experienced stares all over the US.

go to Australia and have a great time...I love Australia and honestly, am tired of the US saying how great they have it, how up to date they are with everything....I just tell them they have never lived in Australia...

there probably is, but who cares? It's not like you will be the ONLY black person there. And I'm sure not eveyone will be racial, and they'll most likely just forget about it if they do think of you differently. Besides, it's not your fault if they are un educated and rude. Just don't think about them, but the fun you want to have ;)
