I'm assuming you are thinking about upgrading. Before you do run the upgrade advisor found here.
http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/content.aspx?ctId=390
It will tell you if you need to upgrade anything prior to installing Vista.
Issues are generally due to software not having upgrades available and drivers not yet available for peripherals (printers, scanners, etc.). Game manufacturers seem to be the slowest in making upgrades available. If you have a lot of specialized software and games you probably will run into problems. So wait 2 months or so for manufacturers to catch up.
I have it on a brand new system and I love it. Wonderful tools and amazing graphics.

You have some GREAT answers, only ONE was wrong. The member that said that VISTA was just about the same as XP etc etc failed to observe the many many new FEATURES.
Why don't you have a look at some DEMOS of VISTA ?
Log in to this website and then click on the various options like EASIER,SECUIRITY,MORE MOBILE, and ENTERTAINMENT.....there are HUGE improvements over XP even though you may wish to wait a few months if you want that SERVICE PACK 1 that everyone think is so important.
Meanwhile here is the site. It really tells you (turn up your speakers) about the many new features and will help you decide for yourself.
Just remember that 50 million have been sold SO FAR and by next year 100 million copies of VISTA will be used. I intend to buyt the best manual available and study each feature so as to get maximum value. The reason is that VISTA will be around for the next FIVE years or more and I want to be up to date on it.
then the website comes up click on the link that says.
"See Windows Vista" and then click on "See it Now". Click on this and then follow the demos one by one.
Here is the site:

First point, how old is your pc? More importantly how much RAM does it have? Vista requires a lot more that XP to run smoothly (although it does have a feature called ready boost which uses removable media like usb sticks or sd cards to help in that general department. It doesn't strictly use it as ram but it does have an impact on performance).
Second, is all of your hardware supported? Many people have been complaining that there are no drivers for there particular graphics card etc... This is due to lack of support from the manufacturer.
I have Vista on my laptop for general use (internet, music, office) and have had no problems. In fact I really like it, but i wouldn't use it for gaming.
There isnt anything fundamentally different between XP and vista other than vista looks pretty and requires faster hardware.
If you are upgrading for the sake of it then avoid, but if its for a new PC then id say make the plunge. XP will no longer be distributed next year and support for it will wane.

I would advise you not to. I have windows vista and it took me a long time to figure it out. None of the programs are compatible with the school's computers so i have to go out and by those programs which will cost me even more money. If you want to save money I would suggest that you buy a different computer without Windows Vista.

Vista is too new, remember all the problems Windows XP had when it first came out? Wait until they fix all the bugs. Maybe in six months to a year.

I have Vista, and it performs just as well as XP. The only problem I have run into is that Flash MX 2004 will sometimes freeze up for no apparent reason.
However, I would wait until they release the service pack.

If you are talking about upgrading then download Windows Vista upgrade advisor to Scan your system, it will tell you what version you Can upgrade to and other information you need to upgrade your system. This OS is new and it has problems, do some research first, I am going to wait for a while, I am happy with XP for now.

If you really want to see it works and how it suits your needs, I would go buy another hard drive then install vista on it. If you have problems simply swap back to the old drive. It does take a while to see how it works.
