It is commonly believed to be descended from Old Persian in the same way that Modern Greek is descended from Ancient Greek and Modern Hindi from Sanskrit. However, some linguists dispute this and believe it may have a Parthian or Scythian origin instead. Of course, I would never tell this to any Iranians you meet. The Parthians and Scythians were Indo-Iranians too but their languages belonged to a different branch of Indo-Iranian (Notheastern) rather than Southwestern or "Persic," the group to which Old Persian belonged.
