So, if anyone can go to heaven if they "repent their sins" then why would anyone try to be good for the sake of getting into heaven?

In God's eyes no sin is greater than another. We are all sinners. If anyone accepts Jesus Christ as their Savior, then they are saved by the blood of the Lamb, their salvation does not get taken away. However, we do have to confess and repent of our sins. But, that does not mean that God will not dole out punishment to those who deserve it. I do not remember the exact scripture, but it does say in the bible that we must not mistreat the young ones. God says that He has special angels watching out for them and they will come back to Him and report everything to Him. So while I believe that someone who does molest a child can still go to heaven, I also believe that they will be punished in this lifetime for that awful wrong that they did.

The answer is yes if they truly repent and never commit this sin again, because only the sin against the Holy Spirit is not forgiven, all other sins can be.
So what is the down-side? well dying suddenly without repenting is the frightening reality that all sinners face,it is unwise to suppose that you have another hour or day ahead of you,and after death our judgement is instant.
No one should play Russian roulette with eternity.

Only God knows their heart- The Bible says that "Everyone that calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved"- and "If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from ALL unrighteousness". That said, I don't believe anyone who is TRULY saved (going to Heaven) lives a lifestyle that is contrary to Christ... the word "Christian" means "little Christ / Christ-follower"... Christians follow Christ- Christians struggle with sin of different kinds and degrees but it is a STRUGGLE (not just a doing of what they want to do and believing that God will forgive whatever). All I know is that I would not want to be them on the Day of Judgement!!! Hebrews 4:13, Ecclesiastes 11:9, Romans 14:12, and Hebrews 13:17(Everyone, especially spiritual leaders, must give an account to God)

regarding your detail: someone would try to be good because a) they sincerely want to do what is right before God and b) God is not fooled - repentance is not a matter of saying some magic words, but of change of heart. God will not be fooled by someone who intends to commit evil all their life and then at the 'last minute' get by. 'Death-bed conversions' still have to be sincere.

I think that you know that God is a God of mercy. We all had fallen natures. It's only by the grace of God that we can be truly pentant and forgiven. Still doesn't mean one does not need purification before entering into Heaven.

As a community american Indian, I even have many kinfolk who have been abused via Anglican clergymen interior the residential college equipment which became into legislated legally in Canada as previous due as 1996. As a Christian I even have found out that Jesus warned of wolves in sheeps outfits who does not be Christian yet counterfeit, in line with probability even deceiving themselves. it could appear as if a "No actual Scotsman" fallacy yet is definitely actuality. As a theologian I comprehend the biblical type of forgivness and reconciliation. If we seem on the occasion in scripture, Joshua made a treaty with the Gibeonites and hundreds of years later King Saul broke the treaty. David asked forgiveness of them and reconciliation occurred after seven Israelites have been killed to catch up on the transgression (See Gibeonites Avenged, 2 Samuel 21). a lots easier version is interior the hot testomony tale of Zacchaeus (Luke 19:8) who confirmed actual repentence via vowing to repair and recompense for his offenses. God knows the objective of the middle regardless of if one is remorseful for the situations of sin or is basically sorry to be caught in trespess. actual repentence demands action! If somebody is sorry, we could desire to consistently be waiting to work out some data! "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the appearance wrath? teach via the way you reside which you have repented of your sins and became to God!" Luke 3:7,8
