We are having a 2 part thing--destination and then a big reception once we return. My fiance and I are paying for the wedding itself (including airfare and hotel for 12 people), and his parents are paying for the reception...we are older and I think we should pay the whole thing, but they offered and really seem to want to do this. My father is deceased, so he's out, and my mother really isn't in any position to help much financially.

It depends on the culture. In the US, its tradition for the bride's family to pay for the wedding, and her family is the only family to bear the burden of the celebration.
My boyfriend and I have talked about who is going to pay for the wedding because it was a little unclear. Our cultures both claim the Groom should be the one to pay for the full cost of the wedding, but we've decided to split the cost because it's too much of a financial burden on one side.

My fiance and I are paying for a majority of our wedding expenses but my parents are going to contribute a bit, mostly for my dress and the cake. I think nowadays the bride and groom usually pay for everything themselves.

My fiance and I are paying for our June 2008 wedding. We are setting aside money each paycheck as well as putting our income tax refunds into the wedding account.

I got married a little over a year ago, and the wedding was a big joint effort. My husband paid for a lot, I paid for what I could but I had just lost my job. My parents paid for some things (my wedding present from them was my dress) and his parents paid for others.
It was all really informal. But then, we had pizza delivered to the church for our reception.

I got married a year ago tomorrow.
My husband and I paid for all but the food, flowers and the cake. We bought the shirts and ties for the guys (they wore regular suits), the decos for the reception, the decos for the church, the invites, the napkins, ring pillow, flower basket, unity candle, etc.
Oh, and half my dress. My mom helped pay for it. she also paid for half the food (the moms and grandma's split the food and made it them selves). she also did the donations for the church hall where we had the ceremony.
Husband's mom and grandma did food.
Husbands aunt made the cake for our wedding present (it was huge, 3 tiers and a fountain).
Husband's other grandma did the flowers (she works at a florist so they were warehouse priced)

My husband and I paid for our own wedding. That's the best thing to do, since couples are usually out on their own working. Gone are the days when a girl is just going right from her parents' home to her husband's...
