IF you are required to have a Visa, then check your visa to see if it is multi-entry or single entry for U.S. If it is single-entry then you have a problem, as once you step outside the U.S. you will have to re-enter.

If you don't need a visa to visit (under visa waiver program), then you are fine, no problem at all.

I certainly would suggest having a visa/Passport on you when visiting. You would need it getting from Canada into the USA and vice versa. If you are driving from Canada to the USA you will not need it, but flying is different in which you will need the Visa/Passport.

As long as you carry your passport, you can pass freely between canada and the US. as long as you aren't planning to stay for more than 3 months, then it is just classed as a short trip/holiday/vacation.
