Kai would be an easy alternative. Otherwise try to pick a name with similar sounds either the ki or al sound as both children and pets are supposed to hear and respond to the sounds at the beginning and end of words - beginning is better for children, not sure for definate with pets! Hope that helps!

I wouldn't worry about it sounding the same, I rescued a female german shepherd when she was about 2-3 years old and she had always been called Dina?! Anyway I called he Schrody (after ErikmSchrody from House of Pain) and she soon got used to it....she was a great dog! Boys names for a geman shepherd, that I think are nice:
Ned
Erik,
DJ (or Deej)
Zinc
Tonic
Keane
Duke
Samson
Ebs (short for Ebeneezer)
To name but a few, here's a link too to some more names, it also gives you tips on good names for dogs to repond to etc:

Good luck :)

In all honesty, there is plenty happening there that this is impossible to assert. definite, perchance some GSD, perchance some Lab, possibly some Bullie-breed in there. yet at this element, many purebred domestic canines do no longer look completely like their father and mom (my Whippet, at 9 weeks, looked, to others, like a Staffie!!). this is extra obvious what she is as she matures. I somewhat doubt there is any Belgian Mal. in her because of the fact they are somewhat uncommon, and not going to get right into a mix? This oftentimes happens with the extra populous breeds (eg Shepherds, Labs). i might basically opt to characteristic she looks dreadfully skinny in, i think of, photograph 3 Pile interior the foodstuff!!

well done on rescuing a shepherd ive got two rescues and one normal if you can call him that,as for names karl, carlos, charlie anything that sounds similar, make sure you use his new name often and when he comes to you reward him well, shepherds take along time to get over ill treatment so give him plenty of love and hugs, anything like my 3 they all want hugs at the same time, quite amusing unless we are at dog school.

Actually I like the name he has now, different & more easily understood by him cuz it is different... dogs don't understand their names, but the tones of your voice when you say their names, so it might be hard to change the name on a second hand dog - KUDO'S for adopting too :)..it would have to be a name similar sounding to the name he has already to change it .. if it does work...TC & Peace :)

I once knew a German Shepherd Dog called KARL. He shouldn't take long to get used to that, although eventually he would get used to any name you choose, however different it sounds at first.

Hi!..Congratulations on choosing a Rescue dog!
How about "Conan"
Conan is the anglicized version of the Gaelic male name Conán, which means "little wolf" or "little hound".
I suppose it's a little of the mark as well!.
OR!
Keir, Origin Celtic,meaning Dark skin.
Whatever you name him i'm in no doubt he'll have a wonderful life with you and your family. All the Best ,coco

What about Jake - I know it doesn't sound that similar but I can't think of anything that does. To be honest, he will soon get used to a change of name - my dog will answer to anything - he is actually called Mickey but my partner calls him Spooner (don't ask me why) and he always responds!!!!!!! lol. Well done for giving a dog a good home - glad he is settling in well.

Kyler- My in laws have a huge german shepherd that was bred to be a police dog and his name is Kyler. He is really intimidating but he is super friendly, unlike their 8 lb. shih tzu who will growl if you look at him wrong!
