There are a variety of chemical and mechanical scratch removers you can buy (see links). I have a mechanical one and it only failed me once on an extremely scratched rental disc.

Hi. How did they get so bad in the first place ? Some people are under the impression that DVDs and CDs are indestructible which they are not(this is partly due to Phillips and Sony who said they can take rough treatment and still play). The label side of the discs is more prone to damage as the information is closer to the surface than the side that's read by the laser.I am not trying to ridicule you, just pointing out some facts .As others have said there are various products available to treat the scratches, but if the damage is on the other side i am not sure if it can be fixed.
I hope you get them repaired to enjoy them again.
Cheers.

Try some of the cleaning chemicals the answerer above mentioned.

Another thing to keep in mind, when you start thinking about upgrading your DVD viewing experience (if you aren't already), remember that Blu-Ray is affected by scratches a lot more then HD-DVD.

Try spraying some furniture polish on them and then wipe them off with a soft dry towel or cloth.
